For my son's 5th birthday we wanted something different.
We looked through books and found ideas that interested him. He enjoys watching the discovery chanel and trips to the museum, so an egtypian themed party was perfect. We sent invitations in the form of treasure map scrolls. I aged/burned the edges of the paper and rolled them up with twine. Once everyone arrived, we started with the games. First we went hunting for small die cut 3-d pyramids with hersey kisses inside. We played pin the amulet on the mummy. I traced my son's outline and drew on mummy wrapping and then we taped on cut outs of egytpian anks. The next activity was a real hit. We took inexpensive toilet paper and let the kids wrap each other up like mummies. I took a picture of each child like this to send home later. Our final event/activity took place at the end of the party. The kids were sent on a treasure hunt to find their grab bags. We put pieces of a map all over the house. Each one had a clue to where to find the next piece and part of the map on the other side. Once we found all the pieces we put the puzzle back together and followed it to our grab bags. I used gold bristol board to cut out 3-D pyramid shapes and filled them with gold playdough, rubber snakes, glitter glue pens and chocolate coins. I also hid coloring books of egyptian pictures with the grab bags. The cake was made to look like a pyramid and I used edible glitter to decorate it. I rented an egytian hyroglyph kit form the Royal Ontario Museum for all the kids to look at. It had a replica scarab with it so the children could use a magnifing glass to see the hyroglyphs on the under side. When we looked at this I gave each of the children a print out with thier name translated into hyroglyphs. It was a fun time for everyone involved and my son will never forget his party.
