9 Year Old Egyptian Party For my daughter's last birthday party, we did an Egyptian theme because that is what they were learning about in school. So right off the bat, the kids loved it! The
girls were almost ALL Cleopatra (hard to remember which one is which) and the boys were archaeologists. For invitations, we printed on papyrus (parchment paper) and wrote everyone's names in
hieroglyphics. For games, we did wrap the mummy (toilet paper), a dig, where we filled kiddie pools with sand and buried gold coins and pieces of clay pots that were broken (make sure to
break any sharp edges) and some of them were spray painted gold. Also inside each sandbox was the first clue of a scavenger hunt. All of the clues were written onto paper that I had boiled in
tea, so it looked really old. I also have a calligraphy pen, so I handwrote the clues. Part of the hunt was to go into the "Alexandria Library" (my dining room-closed off with brown
paper and candles burning) and search through tons of huge Egypt books that we have for information leading to the next clue. Oddly enough, they learned a lot about the Egyptian gods and
didn't even notice! If they coudln't figure out the clue, they could use some of their gold coins to purchase help from an adult. For decoration we used the brown paper that I mentioned-It's
called builder paper and you can get it at Home Depot or Lowe's and it's MUCH cheaper than the rolls of paper that you buy at the craft stores. We used chalk to draw huge blocks and then
glyphs and drawings to make it look like the inside of a pyramid. We then hung it from the ceiling in the house to make it feel like the inside of a tomb. We also used tulle (clearance at
Hobby Lobby) draped outside over the arbor to look like mosquito netting at the archaeology dig. The cake was a golden pyramid (found the recipe online). The goodie bags were small plastic
flower pots (3/$1 at dollar store) filled with tiny little paintbrushes (used in a dig to remove dirt) and small spiral pads with mechanical pencils and candy. We also made camel cookies
(cutter from Williams Sonoma). We played Egyptian/belly dancing music the whole day and the kids just loved it!
