Party Supplies

My daughter, Mary Elizabeth, just turned 1 this past March.  We invited a little more than 25 children, ranging in age from 3 months to 7 years old. The challenge was finding a theme and activities wherein everyone would have a good time, and I think we accomplished it.  First, I decdided to use the theme of Sesame Street First Birthday. I bought blank invitation cards at Office Depot. I downloaded pictures of my favorite Sesame Street characters. Then I wrote a poem about the party. It went like this:  Mary Elizabeth is turning one, Elmo says, "Come join the fun."  Big Bird will be there, Cookie Monster, too, If you can't be there, we will be blue.  The fun starts at two and ends at four, There will be lots of food, fun games and much more. Coral Ridge Country Club is where it will be, There are lots of great things there to do and to see. The party is on March 29th, a Saturday, If you can make it, have your mommy call and say you can come and play. Then, I put all of the typical party information in invitation format underneath. (I also put that the party was brought to you by the letters M and E and the number 1). I found some yellow feathers at a local craft store, and I used them as confetti in the invitations. The children loved receiving a feather from Big Bird!! Since people were coming from other cities, we made little signs directing people to the party. I took pictures of Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Elmo and blew them up at Kinkos.  Then, I traced their pictures on yellow, blue and red construction paper.  I traced Big Bird's orange and hot pink legs, and I used googly eyes for their eyes, and an orange pom pom for Elmo's nose and a black pom pom for Cookie Monster's nose.  Each character was holding another sign telling them where the party was. Then, I had huge signs in front of the club with big bouquets of balloons saying that the party was here!! The country club did the food, so I didn't have to worry about that.  I decorated the walls and ceiling with all of the Sesame Street First Birthday Party decorations. I put the rest of the yellow feathers in  a trail from the front door to where the party was being held.  That was such a hit, too.  We had Sesame Street cds blasting Sesame Street music where the party was.  A half hour into the party, Big Bird came thru the door with his own boom box, and he brought his friends, Cookie Monster and Elmo, to play with the children.  They danced with the characters, and then it was time to open the pinata. I bought a special pinata at pinatas.com. It was in the shape of a Big Bird, holding the number 1.  I converted it into a pinata with pull strings because I thought it may upset some of the children if Big Bird was being attacked by a stick.  That turned out well. Since it was almost time for Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Elmo to leave, we brought out a homemade cake and sang Happy Birthday to Mary Elizabeth. After that, the characters left the party. Then, we played a game.  The game was if you had a sticker on the back of your chair, you could come up and take a prize out of the goodie bag.  All of the children had a sticker because everyone's a winner at Mary Elizabeth's birthday party, so they were thrilled to come up for their prizes.  I had them come up according to age.  I had typical Sesame Street party favors for the bigger children, and I bought Sesame Street books for the younger children.  We finished the party with cookies in the shape of the characters. I bought a cookie press, and made sugar cookies and colored them yellow, blue and red for each character.  I also made colored white chocolate figures of each of the characters and put them in each of the children's goody bags. We then sang "C is for Cookie." And we finished by singing, "N is for Nathan.  That's good enough for me," as each child left the party. It was very successful.  I have been getting calls from people who saw the party from afar, as to helping them with their parties.  It was a lot of fun.
