Flower and Garden Party 5yr

Honorable Mention

April 2002

Pam in Magnolia, AR

For my daughter's 5th birthday, we had a flower/gardening-themed party for 10 guests. I made the invitations on my computer. They read: "A few short years ago, God planted a seed in our lives.  We have helped that little seed to grow, and now she's turning five. So in keeping with the theme, and in honor of her day, we hope you'll help us celebrate in a very special way."  The front of the invitation had a graphic of a flower on it and a pretty flower border. I used a fancy font and a little color.  I stamped each envelope with either a flower, lady bug, or bumble bee and wrote the guests name in a paint pen in the coordinating color.  I used flower, lady bug, and bumble bee stickers as envelope seals. This was a very inexpensive way to make a custom, cute, very nice invitation. Several weeks before the party, I started painting terra cotta pots for each guest. It took a lot of time, but if you are artistic, you will get an impressive result for very little money. Each pot was different, and I let the guests choose which they wanted. I placed a piece of Styrofoam in each pot.  I cut out different colored construction paper flowers with a dye cutter and glued a lollipop on the center of each flower.  A wrapped the lollipop stick with a green pipe cleaner, using the excess to fashion leaves.  I then stuck the flower in the Styrofoam. I covered the Styrofoam with wrapped candy. The guest got these pots and a packet of flower seeds for favors.  We had the party in a park, so I simply let the children play on the park equipment for their activity. For food, we served flower-shaped sandwiches (cut out with cookie cutters), a "garden" salad with lettuce, plum tomatoes, pansies, sunflower kernels, mandarin oranges, and apple wedges.  The kids thought it was very neat that they could eat the flowers.  We also served a couple of kinds of chips.  Everything was served out of flower pots with new garden tools. Punch was served from watering cans. I ordered a sheet cake from a bakery.  It had a little girl holding gardening tools with flowers at her feet and a rainbow in the background.  Each kid decorated a plastic visor and gardening gloves to keep as a favor as well. We had face painting and a sunflower seed spitting contest.  The kids had so much fun, and the moms were really impressed. Everyone went home and planted their seeds. It's been a year, and most of their flowers are still alive.
