For my daughters first birthday I used a garden theme, (bugs, flowers, butterflies, etc) Invitations were sent out using posterboard paper (large black circle and small black circle
combined to make the body and then I covered the large circle with a red piece I cut in half and used prongs to connect to make wings that opened.
Inside I wrote "Little spots and Polka Dots That's what little lady bugs are made of….Won't you come and have some fun? There's a sweet little lovebug turning one! join us for a birthday bash for kylie On Sunday ______________ Fly over to __________ Park for games and fun Infestation time 1:00pm Give us a buzz at ______________. I then glued spots on after punching holes in the extra black poster board and then put wiggly eyes...very cute!) We had the party at a local park...got there early and set up. We had three flower pots, one filled with M&M's, one with Skittles and one with Hot Tamales then I put a flower in each pot sticking up. Because we were at the park we didn't have to worry about keeping the kids entertained too much....we brought outdoor games, volleyball, horseshoes, soccer, football, bubbles, hoolahoops and jump ropes. We hung streamers around the covering and then hung butterflies hanging down around the edges. For food we served PB&J sanwiches that I cut with a cookie cutter in the shape of butterflies, potato salad, salsa, chips, pin wheels (cream cheese, green chile and deli-sliced roast beef rolled up in a tortilla and then cut into about 1" slices), Magic Fruit Skewers (apple, grapes, strawberries and melon then on the tip I put a piece of melon that was cut in the shape of a star) with Fruit dip (IT IS SO GOOD....1 cup vanilla yogurt, 2 Tbs brown sugar, 1 can crushed pineapple and 1/2 cup taosted coconut) and last but not least dirt (i filled a pail with crushed oreos, a mixture of cream cheese, chocolate pudding and whipped cream in layers along with gummy worms throughout....then it is served with a shovel!) Instead of making a cake since the kids were going to be so active, I make cup cakes inside of ice cream cones. I decorated the tops of the cupcakes to look like butterflies, ladybugs and flowers using icing and gummy candies, the kids loved them because they were so easy to hold onto. Everyone was joining in on the theme because all her presents were wrapped in bug wrapping paper and came with cards covered in bugs and flowers. For treat bags for the kids I took green lunch sacks and cut the top with special scissors to look like grass inside I put suckers that looked like flowers and butterflies, a small bug pinball game, flower rings and lots of different candy. The outside of the bags were individually decorated with messages telling the guests things like "thanks for buzzing by my first birthday" and were covered in flowers and butterflies, ladybugs and bees. The kids loved them. I couldn't leave out the adults so I took lifesavers and removed the wrappers, I printed my own wrappers using Paint Shop Pro and put a picture of Kylie with antenna and then put a message "Kylie's First Buggy Birthday! Thanks for Buzzing by for my special day!" I secured the wrappers with a glue stick. The parents were amazed at everything!
