Halloween Sleepover

Honorable Mention

November 2005

Janet in Wayland, Massachusetts, USA

This year we had a Halloween Sleepover party for my 8 year old son.  He was allowed to invite 4 friends to the party.  Invitiations were printed on Halloween paper and invited his friends for a Frightfully Good Time of Halloween Games, Ghoulish Food, Scary Movies and Lots of Treats.   When everyone arrived (in their costumes)we served a dinner of "worms" which was homemade pasta dyed green with food coloring.  In the middle of the table we had a fruit and soda punch in a large punchbowl. We handed out red and green frozen hands (Oriential Trading company mold) and ice cubes with spiders in them, which they were each allowed to add to the punch.  For dessert we had "Spider Cake" which was a  brownie cake decorated with powdered sugar in the design of a spider and web.  During dinner, we had one guessing game where all the boys had to guess the number of chocolate coins in the Halloween jar.  We told them the winner would be announced at breakfast the next day.   After dinner, the games began in our "haunted house" which is the decorated unfinished party of our basement. We covered the walls with spooky paper, used black lights and a Halloween CD called Symphonies from the Crypt. We started with finding the eyeballs in the green jello.  The second game was a matching game where they had to reach into a paper bag lined with a plastic bag and identify the monster body part. Then I gave them cards with body parts written on them and they had to put them in front of the right bag. We used a peeled tomato for the heart, unshelled peanuts for toes, slivered almonds for fingernails, rubber balls coated with oil for eyeballs, and spaghetti coated in oil for guts.  It was a little messy, but everyone guessed right.  Next we played the Mummy game where they paired off and took turns wrapping each other in toilet paper. This game is always very funny.  The forth game required them to sit on orange and black balloons filled with little toys (some spiders, some skeletons) and whoever collected the most skeletons won.  It was hysterical watching them pounce around the room on the balloons - the key is to not blow them up too much so they're hard to pop. The fifth and final game was a Treasure Hunt. They were told that their treat bags had been stolen by a monster, and were each given a "Survival Kit" with everything they needed to solve the mystery.  The kits were small shopping bags with their names on it containing various items (flashlights, glo in the dark necklace, etc.) The 1st clue was two puzzle pieces in each of their kits.  When they put the 10 puzzle together, it looked like a skeleton head with a poem written on the head that pointed them to the next clue.  The 2nd clue was a poem printed in 2 point font, and they needed the magnifying glasses in their kits to read it. This pointed them to the 3rd clue which was printed (using Word) in light blue font covered with a pink confetti pattern. To read the words they needed to use the red sun glasses in their kit. (We made these by buying some cardboard glasses and gluing red celephone in the eye piece).  The 4th clue required them to use a decoding pattern in each of the kits which told them to follow a lit path in the woods. They each took the little flashlights out of the kits and ran into the forest where we used glowsticks hung from tree branches to lead them to a box with their treat bags.  They all solved the clues together and enjoyed unwrapping the treats in the end. The rest of the evening was movies, more dessert and playing, and fortunately they did finally go to sleep. We kept breakfast simple with donuts, and announced the winner of the coin guessing game. We had hoped to show them a video that we made of their games the night before, but never had the time to set it all up. We were all exhausted the next day, but I know my son loved his party and I think all his friends did too.
