We had Halloween in January !!!! My 9 year old daughter wanted a Halloween party, but because of health problems, we were not going to be able to pull it off in October.  So, I told her we would do it for her January birthday, and idea she loved because it would be so very different from any other party. We were able to have an incredible party because I bought everything from Oriental Trading and Party City after October when it was all discounted really steep.  We also got back out all the Halloween decorations (kind of strange after just putting away the Christmas stuff). Our invites were ones we got on sale (of course) but we made sure we wrote that everyone had to come in costume.  The girls were already excited about the party before the day even got here as they got to put on Halloween costumes in winter. We decorated our basement with black lights, spider webbing, black crepe paper, black balloons, the occasional spider hanging down and strung our bat lights on the walls and doorways. We had no other lights on except a few lamps with the black lights, the bat lights and a few candles, so the basement was really dark. Of course, the scary Halloween sounds CD was going as well. I also made tombstones out of poster board for each of the girls.  I spray painted white posters with gray spray paint, unevenly, to give them an aged look.  I then wrote each girls name and a witty rhyming quip.  For example, for my daughter I made her tombstone say " RIP Here lies Alexandra who died being strangled by her too tight bra". Pretty funny at age 9 !!! We set the tombstones in a part of the basement and made it look like a cemetery. We kept no lights on upstairs, except the black light at the front door. We got glow in the dark spider webbing and glowing plastic footprints that led the girls from the front door to the basement. My husband answered the door dressed as Igor with a hunchback (mask and all).  He only grunted when greeting the girls. I was dressed as a scary witch and I stood at the top of the basement stairs directing the girls to the evil dungeon. As the walked past me, I would tickle their necks with a feather and it would start the chill bumps.  I did shine a flashlight down the stairs for the girls as I didn't want anyone hurt !!!When the girls got down to the basement, my neighbor was sitting at a table dressed as a fortune teller and she told fortunes using the 8 ball and some other little tidbits of info about the girls. If you weren't watching a girl have her fortune told there was a jar of black and orange M & M's (bought on clearance from Target)and you had three chances of guessing how many. The girls also occupied themselves by admiring each other's costumes and giggling over what each tombstone read.  Since we were having a dinner, I only laid out some candy corn for the girls to munch on. It didn't take long for all our guests to arrive (about 15 girls) and when they were all present, I gathered them into a circle and told a few ghost stores that I got off the internet (age appropriate). One of the stories involved a mean old witch stealing children. I told them that in the box was what was left of the witch after being dead and buried. Each girl had to feel inside of the box and make a guess as to the body part.  I used cold peeled grapes for eyes, spaghetti for intestines, a peeled tomato for the heart, celery for bones, raw string beans for fingers, a liver for a liver, etc.  They got a kick out of this !!! If they passed the body part initiation, they had to go and find their tombstone in the cemetery and lay dead in front of it while waiting for the other bodies to arrive.  When the cemetery was filled, we added a little more light and then proceeded to do a few games.  First was a mummy wrap.  Each girl teamed with another girl and they had to wrap each other in toilet paper (buy really cheap TP to keep the cost low). The girl to wrap her partner first won a prize.  Then I had the girls switch, the wrappers were now the wrappies.  Again, another prize. They loved this game !!! We then split up into teams and did a relay race with two pairs of panty hose and four oranges.  The girls had to tie the panty hose around their waist and put one of the oranges in a leg.  They then had to bat an orange around some cones on the floor by swinging the orange. They could not use their hands, only moving thier hips.  This was hilarious to do as well !!!  We had Halloween bingo planned, but never got to it because after about two hours for all this, we moved on to "dinner prepared by Igor"  Igor's dinner consisted of worms and blood-which were hot dogs sliced lengthwise and roasted in the oven until curly and done. Blood was ketchup of course. We also had boogers on a stick which was cheeze whiz, thinned with a little milk and green food color to make it gross. I told the girls they had to eat the boogers or no birthday cake.  They used pretzels to dip into the "boogers" I also got a brain shaped jello mold (gotta love Oriental Trading) and added whip cream to the grape jello mix to make it gray colored. We washed Igor's yummies down with "day old bathwater punch" which was a mix of lemonade, sprite and rainbow sherbet. You mix this in a clean, new dishpan and add a few dinner mints for the "bits of soap" It was actually quite tasty. All of course, was served on paper plates and napkins bought on clearance!!! The birthday cake was sure talked about !!!!! I made a Kitty Litter cake.  It is essentially crumbled yellow cake and german chocolate cake, colored with green food dye to look like kitty litter. Tootsie rolls are softened and stretched to look like kitty droppings.  You serve it in a clean, new kitty litter box and scoop it out with a new pooper scooper. The above recipes can be found on fabulousfoods.com. After we ate, our birthday girl opened presents. I then gave the results of the M & M count contest.  We put on some dance music and let the girls dance until the parents picked them up. Goodie bags were Halloween trinkets I found clearance around town and through Avon-they have great lip balms and lotions for the girls which were Halloween themed. We also decorated moon pies for the girls to take home with orange icing and Halloween cake decorations from an idea out of Southern Living. The girls also got to take their tombstones home with them.  This party is still talked about a whole year later !!!!
