We had a party for our scout group that can be adapted to suit many ages. Everyone arrived in costumes and brought their own flashlights(have extras on hand for those who forget theirs).
We divided the group into 2 teams. We had a scavenger hunt of sorts. Each team was given a list of things to find- most of the items were decorations that were hidden around the yard(glow in the dark ones were fun). Each item had a # on it, so you had to get up close to look at it and record the # on your team sheet. For older kids, you can make it scary by having someone jump out, etc. We had relay races that included pass the mini pumpkin from chin to chin, throw the witch(stuffed) into the cauldron, walk like a monster, and break the balloon attached to your friends ankle. You might like to add musical placemats(which we bought at the Dollar store-used for musical chairs(great for little kids so they don't fall off the chair-fun for big kids so they can slide into base), but the kids get to take their placemat home after using it at the party). Then while we were eating lots of scary sounding food, the parents went outside to hide the pumpkins. We bought the plastic mini-pumpkins, wrote #'s on the bottom of them(but you could write their names or initials if you send them home with them- we are reusing them next year,so used #s),and filled them ahead of time with candy and trinkets. Each kid was given their own number to get, and then they had to find all 5(or whatever # you want)of them. Then with flashlights, they went out to search for -THEIR PUMPKINS ONLY. If they found a pumpkin that wasn't theirs, they were to leave it alone and continue to search. There was a prize for the first one finished, so they didn't cheat at all. When you find all your pumpkins, you go and help a friend or the little ones. We put pieces of paper with numbers on them into a hat and mixed them up. Then we randomly placed them into the pumpkins. the kids used them to get Pokemon cards last year(but Harry Potter, hockey, baseball, etc would work too)We laid out all the cards, and then they followed the numerical order to pick their cards. I was surprised how well this went over, but they enjoyed selecting their own cards. You can use the numbers for any treats that won't fit inside the little pumpkins. I hope you can adapt some of these ideas to suit your group!
