Harry Potter 6 yrs-?
My daughter decided on a Harry Potter party for her 6th birthday and I was excited because I myself am a huge Harry Potter fan. So I let my imagination run wild. The invitations I made on regular printer paper to read just like the Hogwarts invite with exception of important party information. I then made up a pan of diluted coffee and coffee grounds and dipped each invitation to give it the old parchment effect. Once dried, stamped it with the Hogwarts stamp(dollar store), rolled it up, tied it with a ribbon and stuck some feathers in it. I gave the invite to the parents to place on the kids pillow or elsewhere so they thought it was delivered by owl. For the party, I had to get several volunteers to dress the part and set up multiple stations. First stop was in Diagon Alley. Each kid had to first stop at Gringots and use there key and remove a bag of fake wizard money. Next stop was Olivander's to buy wands, I made wands out of dowel rod, stained and attached a piece of paper stating the magical ingredient, length and wood type. Then we had a table set up under a tree with cans stacked up on top, if the child tested their wand and was given the wrong one the cans would fall down by a pull of a wire. If the child was given the right wand, the top can would levitate. We attached fishing wire to the pop tab and threw the wire over a limb of the tree, just pulling slightly on the wire made the can float. 3rd stop in Diagon Alley was the robe shop. I found cheap black fabric and made each kid a black robe. Also made hats out of black craft foam and gold rope. When they entered, each kid had to get there head measured, length of arms and from shoulder to toe and was given a robe & a hat to buy. Then they were finally off to Hogwarts. They had to sit in the grass in front of a bar stool covered with a dark sheet and the sorting hat on top. Me, Professor McGonagal explained that they will now be sorted into their seperate houses. I hid a walkie talkie under the stool and pre wrote the Sorting Hat Song and I little something to say about each kid and what house to he/she was sorted into. My husband inside the house was the sorting hat speaker with the other walkie talkie. Once the child sat on the stool put the hat on there head and was sorted, I put a sash around there neck which was the color of there house and they sat back down in the grass. Ex, Slytherin green, Gryfindor maroon. When everyone was sorted, they went to their classes. One house per class. We had flying lessons and I made brooms out of long sticks, twine and hay. My sister Tina who has Madame Hooch haircut tought them how to mount the broom and fly. They were running all over the yard with the broom between their legs following her. Potions, our acting friend found a Snape wig and played him to the tee while teaching the students to make blue goo. Herbology, I found little stone flower pots with a frog on it at the dollar store and had one class planting. Transfigurations, the students transfigured blow pops into spiders with pipe cleaners, googly eyes. Spells and Charms, each student received a small cup of sprite and a couple of raisins. When, the dropped the raisin in the cup and said there spell because of the fizz the raisin would raise to the surface. Care of Magical Creatures, my husband dressed up like Hagrid and had a huge bag of hay and green dragon eggs(green balloons with dragon stickers inside). Each student 1st had to run to the bag of hay grab a bunch and build a nest in the yard, then they had to run back get their dragon egg take it back to the nest and hatch it by sitting on it. Surprise they hatched dragon stickers. Once each house completed all their classes it was time to move onto the Great Hall to award the house cup. I decorated the basement with glow in the dark stars hanging from the ceiling above the table. The cake was made to look like a Quiditch field. Green icing for grass and I found online a Quiditch field I printed, cut out and attached it to poster board to make more solid and stuck it in the cake with a little Harry Potter flying around on a broom. Then the house cup award came in which every house won and walked away with a goody bag that had Harry Potter glasses, stickers, licorice wands, every flavor jelly beans, and a snitch made out of styrofoam balls, gold paint, gold glitter and gold feathers. So the kids got to take that home and their wands, robes, sash and hat. It was a great turn out and kept the kids busy for hours and other parents asking you to plan their kids next party. Not to mention, I had several parents still thanking me months later saying their kids wore the costume for halloween or use it for dress ups.
