My son turned 7 and was hoping for an Indiana Jones party that would incorporate ideas from each movie.
His invitations were homemade. I used a natural brown cardstock invite and created a fedora die-cut, embossed it, sanded it so it would look worn and used dark brown cardstock for the band around the hat. I used foam tape to give a 3-D look. I wrapped twine around the inside crease of the card to mock the whip/rugged feel of the charachter. I also drew a small map to our house and burned the edges to give it an old/wornout look. The front simply said Swing on over... The inside said "to help Tyler celebrate his birthday adventure" Then the date time etc. Although this was an outdoor party we did have the movies playing inside for background noise/music. As the kids arrived we had them play in the bounce house outside until all boys were accounted for. First we had them break into pairs for a mummy wrapping game (toilet paper). Next we had them race through an obstacle course we built. They had to crawl through the "catacombs" which were cardboard boxes taped together painted with a faux stone look. They did log rolls up our back hill and shot "poison darts into the target" (nerf guns and a hula hoop). Next they had to step on the correct lettered stones to get to safety. My husband had cut out cardbboard pieces each having a letter on it. The kids were to spell out Indiana. The wrong letters had eggs under them. The cardboard pieces were big enough so the kids did not get egg on them but they did feel the crunch which they thought was cool. Next they had to swing from a rope over our snake pit. We tied a rope onto the swing set and threw a bunch of snakes from the dollar store down in the grass. My husband set up glasses with extra goodies and a number at the bottom. We typed out a clue for each glass. The kids had to read a clue and guess which one matched the clue (like when Indiana had to find the Holy Grail). As they chose the correct glass we added their extra treats to their goodie bags. Each child had 3 turns. Lunch was next. We kept the food simple; hot dogs fruit kabobs chips and juice bags. While the kids were eating we set up the next phase. We posted envelopes around the yard for the kids to find. Each one had a picture cut into a 4 piece puzzle. Once they figured out the picture it lead them to their next location/envelope. The 6th and final envelope was in a ziploc at the bottom of the drink tub outside. They thought reaching into icy water was fun and somewhat daring. The last clue lead them inside for cake ice cream and presents. I used the Indiana Lego sets to decorate my son's cake. The figures and mini bugs looked really cute atop the cake which had small patches of ground up graham crackers to look like sand. I also made a paper tent as part of one of the scenes. We scheduled a 2 1/2 hour party and had only 20 minutes left over. We gave the boys that time to do as they wanted. They chose to race through the obstacle course again and then just bounce it out until the parents arrived. As parents showed up we passed out the goody bags which were simple brown bags with twine handles to match the invites. Our goody bags had Indiana Jones yo-yo whips gold coin chocolates Gold Nugget gum a ring pop (they look like a jewel) Indiana gummies a homemade word search with all Indiana Jones terminology a jungle patterned pencil and the extra candy from the glass guessing game. It was fun listening to the boys talk about their favorite parts of the movies and how each segment of the party played into that. They really connected with what they were supposed to do in the races/obstacle course. I'm really glad my son chose this theme! "
