For my son's 6th birthday party he chose Indiana Jones, but he wanted it to be an adventure treasure hunt. INVITATIONS: we took some pictures of him dressed as Indy. We cut them out and
adhered them to a handmade spinner card that I made. The spinner was a giant grey bolder that would spin toward the picture of him dressed as Indy appearing to run. It turned out really fun
and we had so much feedback because of it. My husband wrote the inside of the card, it read:
Dr. Jones, There is a race for the lost idol of Tiki-(last name)-Casa. Fame and fortune await your arrival. The journey will begin on Saturday, the twenty-third day of the eighth month, once the North American sun begins to set in the west (5 pm). The natives will be feasting and ready for adventure. We anxiously await word of your impending arrival (phone #). As usual, this expedition is a secret one, code name: Michael's 6th Birthday Party. As the kids arrived at the party they were given a paper Indiana Jones party hat we ordered online and a plastic canteen with their name on it. They looked the part. sNACKS: We kept our dinner simple, hot dogs, chips, fruit salad. GAMES: After eating, they played the tissue paper mummy game in 3 groups. Following that we got the presents out of the way. ACTIVITIES: We took the kids to our back yard where my husband and birthday boy had created an obstacle course treasure hunt to find the lost idol of Tiki-last name-Casa. Each child ran the course with a parent at each station to help, and we had the Indiana Jones theme song playing in the background. It went like this: The kids ran down the hill as my husband rolled a giant butcher paper boulder behind them. They ran around a tree to a rope swing we hung from our swing set. The next phase was probably the most fun for parents. With their permission and participation, we had parents sitting on either side of a path we have in our back yard. As the kids ran down the fault line (path) as my husband named it, the parents played the role of angry tribal villagers who were shooting poisonous darts (spit balls through straws) at the kids. This was hysterical. One boy stopped and actually said, I didn't think you were really going to hit me. The last task was the Tunnel of Danger where the kids crawled through 3 dryer boxes we had taped together and filled with plastic spiders and snakes. As they came out they ran to me as I was manning the old trunk that contained a Tiki for each kid. FAVORS: The Tiki was a brown lunch bag I had drawn a Tiki face on and fringed out the top and tied with raffia. It had some candy and a plastic snake inside. That along with their hat and canteen were their goodies. CAKE: The last part of the party was the cake. I had just taken a chocolate cake with chocolate icing and layered two smaller cakes on the top. This gave the look of giant steps. Using palm trees, crushed vanilla wafers as dirt/rock/sand, and some Indiana Jones action figures, along with gold candles, it looked like a scene from the movies. It was a fun, action packed party that my son loves talking about.
