Safari/Rainforest Theme - My son turned 5 years and loves any type of bugs, reptiles, and animals... so I went with the Safari/Rainforest theme for his party.
I started out with Lion King invitations inviting the guests to the party. For decorations, I made goodie bags out of the brown felt, which was cut into squares. I used a square shaped hole puncher and punched holes up the sides and bottom and used cable cord to lace 2 pieces of the felt together. I left the bag open for their items. In addition, I personalized the bags for each child, by writing their names on the outside with green glitter glue. Inside each of their bags were items needed for a Safari Trip… The items were binoculars, snacks (gummi dinos, chex mix, and animal cookies), canteens (8 oz. water bottles- that I wrapped a strip of camouflage fabric around to cover the label), and a camouflage head band (a strip of the same fabric used to tie around the head). For outside decorations (Campsite), I have a screened room separate from the house, but I purchased camouflage tablecloths, plates, cups, and utensils for the food. I also purchased netting from the fabric store and hung this on side of the screen door and stuck bugs and lizards around it. It gave a great look like bugs were crawling everywhere. I also used camouflage streamers to hang vertically from the door to also give the effect that we were inside the formal campsite. For the inside, I decorated the den area as the rainforest and brought Ficus trees from around the house to the den to give the woodsy effect. I also purchased ivy and hung it from the ceiling fan, which of course had snakes and worms hanging... In addition, I also covered the ceiling with green streamers and purchased a rainforest CD, which played throughout the party... I also hung netting in the house with bugs, etc on it. GAMES - (1) Lunch-Fear Factor Style... I made Jell-O bowls for each child and suspended bugs/lizards/snakes inside and covered with whip cream. The object of this game was to pick the bugs, etc. from their jungle nests, which will be cooked later for dinner. Each child had to dig out the bugs, etc. with their mouth only and place them on a plate. This was timed event (1 min.) and the winner received a prize. This game went over very well, since even the girls played it... But the best part was looking at their faces afterwards. (2) Ostrich Egg Relay - We blew up balloons to create a relay in which each child would place a balloon between their legs and run the to destination and pass to their teammate. We chose this game, because the ostrich's arms are too short, they have to move their eggs to their new home with their legs. (3) Safari Hunt - We gathered the children and told that they about embark on a mission in which they would locate animals for researchers to study for a top-secret project. (I was the Rainforest Research Expert). They needed to be careful when picking up the animals and use their binoculars to aid in their search. Also, I mentioned that it was important they wore their headbands to hide them in the jungle. We strategically placed bugs/lizards/snakes/animals around the yard along with 4 eggs with $1 each in them. The children were to hold on to the eggs if they found them. I placed a cage in the middle of the yard (found at the dollar store), which was to collect the animals, etc for the researchers. After all the animals were located and captured… We asked everyone that found to open them and to their surprise, there was money, which made them very happy. We also asked children who didn't have an egg to get an animal of their choice out of the cage to keep… I also allowed the kids with the dollars to get an animal as well. (4) Frog Piñata – We blindfolded the kids and gave them chances to crack open the frog. FOOD – We started the party with appetizers, Peanut butter & Jelly Sandwiches shaped like animals (used cookie cutters). We also ordered pizza when the kids arrived to ensure that it would be hot… don't forget they had snacks in their goodie bags… For the finale, we had a Crocodile Hunter cake, which had Steve Irwin wrestling a croc. I also placed gummi worms on the cake to serve as Anacoda's looking on… The party was a success and everyone enjoyed it. The most time went into the food preparation, which was started the night before, so on Saturday, we could just decorate and wait for the guests to arrive.
