Lady Bug Party For my daughters 2nd b-day, she was really into bugs!! Yuck! So, I decided to do a lady bug party.  I purchased generic lady bug invites from the party store, but I got very creative with the decorations.  I gathered pieces of cardboard and painted flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, and of course lady bugs of all sizes. Some I attached to the gates in my backyard others, to stakes that I secured in the ground all over the backyard, it looked like a magical garden with beautiful larger than life bugs.  I also purchased clay pots that I sponge painted ladybugs on, stuffed with green tissue paper, and large cookies on sticks that where iced to look like laybugs, some also had gummy worms and gummy caterpillars. My daughter was dressed as a ladybug, (so was I), as the guests arrived they entered our garden through flowing blubbles (from our bubble machine)and were each given antannae. (headbands, with pipe cleaners, and pom poms attached) they also got bags to hold their treasures that they would win at each party station. The 1st station was bubble fun, the kids blew bubbles w/all kinds of different size wands, and accessories, they each won bubbles to take home w/the tops painted to look like ladybugs.  #2 was pin the spot on the ladybug. I painted a very large ladybug out of cardboard w/no spots, each child was handed a black spot to stick on.  The kids all got a kick out of this pin the tail on the donkey variation. Ea. child then won sidewalk chalk in the form of butterflies, dragonflies, and flowers. #3. Was a giant flower with the center cut out (plywood), I purchased small round beanbags, and painted them to look like ladybugs, the children took turns lobbing the bugs through the flower. (the boys really liked this one) the boys won foam airplanes and the girls won butterfly hairclips. #4 all the kids went inside to dance to The Ugly Bug Ball by Disney, they won bug stickers, while they were dancing I hide plactic bugs of all kinds all over the backyard, I told the kids party had been invaded with bugs and I needed their help to catch them all.  They  loved searching for the little creatures, they got to keep whatever they found, the child who found the one marked with the letter K for Katie won a giant flower. Then it was craft time, all the kids sat down to make foam door hangers, they glued different bug shapes, and glitter all over.  While they were drying we ate petite sandwiches, and vegi snacks. The birthday cake was of course a giant ladybug, made out of a round bowl, iced red with a cupcake for the head, and peppermint patties for the large spots, junior mints for the small spots, and licorice antannae.  Each child got their own ladybug cupcake. As the party whinned down I brought out the real ladybugs, that I had purchased from the local garden supply store, there was about 500 ladybugs. The kids got to hold them and release them. They really loved this part, and we got some great pictures too. As each little bug left they got one of the ladybug cookie sticks as an additional thank you. This party was really a fun way to get the kids involved with nature.
