We had a "Ladybug" theme for my daughter's third birthday party.
I made invitations from clip art from my computer of a ladybug. I enlarged it and then cut around each ladybug and printed the information on the inside of the card. I bought a ladybug lodge and put live ladybugs in it so the children could see them. As the guests arrived, we made ladybug puppets. I bought a small child's garden glove from Home depot. Then, I hot glued a round black circle from foam that covered the glove. I made red wings that were glued onto the round body. Then I took Styrofoam balls, cut them in half, put glue on them and dipped them in red glitter. These were the two eyes that sat on the top of the body. I added googly eyes to the red glitter so the ladybug would have moving eyes. I punched two holes between the eyes and inserted black pipe cleaners for the antennae. (I did all of the above before the party started). The party guests took black pompoms and glued them to the wings of their ladybug. They dried during the party and that was one of the favors in their goody bag. I made a large leaf cut from poster board. Then I made 4 ladybug beanbags out of felt and the children threw the ladybugs on to the leaf. That was fun. The highlight of the party was the real ladybugs that visited. I called a neighborhood nursery who had ladybugs in stock. We bought them and kept them in the refrigerator until the party. We got them out and let them crawl all over the kids...they loved this!!!!! (I also put a handful in a baby food jar with holes for each child to take home in their goody bag. A raisin soaked in water was enough nourishment for the short time the ladybug would be living in the jar. I encouraged parents to let them go a day or so after they got home.) The cake was so cute!!!!!! I baked 2 white round cakes. I decorated one with chocolate icing and the other I cut in half. On each half, I made pinkish red icing and covered it in that(These were the wings). Then, I carefully placed the wings on the body...with each wing hanging off a little bit. I found some great candy at a candy store and decorated the eyes and used licorice for the antennae. I found black licorice round gum drops and used those for the spots on the wings. It was precious! My grandmother made little ladybug cupcakes that had a leaf with a ladybug on them. They were cute, too. When it was time to go, the children took home their ladybug puppets, real ladybugs, ladybug stickers, and candy in a little red goodie bag that had black dots on it. My daughter loved the party and we saw ladybugs for quite a while in our backyard, which was so much fun!
