For my daughters second birthday, we had a Lilo and Stitch Luau. For the invitations, I used tan paper and typed all of the info on it. I burned the edges to make it look worn and old.  I rolled them and tied them with rafia.  I placed each one in glass bottles that had sand and sea shells in them.  To close the bottle, I put a piece of hawiian material on top and tied a piece of raffia around it. I hand delivered most of them and mailed the others in brightly colored padded envelopes. For the party, I spent about 3 months making a four and a half foot paper meche wave and surf board for the kids to take photos one. I also made wooden cut outs of Lilo and Stitch.  I coverd the floors with blue tarp, to make it look like the ocean. We also had rafts every where for the kids to sit on.  In the door ways I hung netting with sea creatures trapped in them. I used two different sized circular pans for the cake.  The bottom was slightly larger. I covered it with blue rolled fondant and attached red gummy fish around the sides and I put small Stitch figurines all around it (bought on e-bay).  For the top layer, I coverd it in vanilla icing and coverd that in crushed vanilla wafers (put them in a food processor) to make it look like sand. I made palm trees out of candy. The tree trunk was made from miniature twix and the leaves from green fruit roll ups.  I made coconuts with chocolate M&Ms, attached with a small dab of choc. icing.  Those were placed on top. I used tiki mask candles bought from Party City. I made leis out of fruit loops and rafia. Each child received one. For the girls, I made sarongs out of Hawiian material and gave them to them when they came in. For the boys, I gave them brightly colored bandanas. In the back yard we had tiki tourches and hibiscus paper lanterns and we had a turtle shaped pinata.  I gave each of the girls brightly colored purses with hibiscus flowers on them to collect the candy. The boys used small sand buckets.  I also used bigger sand buckets as chip bowls and a large one as a punch bowl. The kids all had a great time and everyone talked about the party for months.  Most people loved the invitations so much that they have them sitting on shelves as little decorations.
