Hula Girl Luau-5 yr.old My daughter chose a luau theme for her 5th birthday party. We purchased the Hula Girl party items from BirthdayZ by ShindigZ. The only thing my daughter had asked for
this year was a water slide, so we rented that back in February. Most of our luau items were purchased from Oriental Trading. We ordered Aloha name tags and looked up all the guests names in
Hawaiian on alohafriendsluau.com. This was a neat site! Everyone had a good time trying to figure out how to pronouce their name. We also had for everyone a flowered lei. You can buy a gross
at your local party supply store. (Ours is Ultimate Party) The adults were thrilled that they were included in the celebration. The girls received a grass skirt and a wrist flower lei. The
cheapest place I found grass skirt (and I searched EVERYWHERE) was Amazingmoms.com. The boys received Hibiscus Bandanas and Beachcomer Hats. I also purchased these by the dozen at
Amazingmoms.com. Also from this website, I purchased everyone a luau frame (adorable) and got some huge, cheap scene setters for decorations. They also have a lot of good party ideas. The
bandanas came from BirthdayZ by ShindigZ and also a Luau Personalized Birthday Banner that my daughter really loved because it had her name on it. (Order early!) For decorations, I went Tiki
crazy! I bought tiki lights, banners, lanterns, drums and even a tiki punch bowl and ladle all from Ultimate Party. These were my centerpieces mixed in with some of the Hula Girl stuff. For
our picture making scene, I took a blue Neat Sheet and hung on the wall. On either side, I put a Hula Girl scene setter mentioned above. At the bottom, we but bamboo poles (taken from a local
field). We used the leaves around the top of the scene and also on the tables around the centerpieces. I was really pleased with how it turned out and the kids couldn't wait to take a picture
"on the beach" with the hula girls. For the food, we had BBQ meatballs (Kraft magazine)skewered with pineapples, pina colada fruit dip with pineapples and strawberries, white
chocolate macadamia cookies, fruit pizza, rainbow goldfish, chips and dip, and skewered cheese and grapes on palm tree picks. To drink, of course, we had Hawaiian punch (lava flow) with
umbrellas with pineapples and cheeries. The kids drank from coconut cups with hula girl straws. The adults drank from hibiscus cups (Oriental Trading)with the umbrellas. I made two
cakes. One was a Hula Girl Cake (with the wonder mold pan) and the other was a beach scene (Wilton 2005) with blue gel "water", brown sugar "sand", and sandal candles. The
Hula Girl cake turned out so good and was the easiest cake I've ever made. All of my serving pieces came from the Dollar Tree. They had a big luau stock in just in time. In addition to the
water slide, we had a hula hoop contest, limbo (made our own out of leftover bamboo!), coconut bowling- with 3 pineapples for the pins (they were expensive-I could not get 9) and a coconut
for the bowling ball. The kids LOVED this game, they wanted to play over and over again, (Have extra coconuts!), and the lava walk (with ice). We had a luau CD playing the whole time
(Oriental Trading). For the favors, the girls got a hibiscus tote bag with a frame, hibiscus tattoo, aloha bubbles, flamingo swirl pop, tropical toostie pop, fruit candy (powder), and their
skirt and leis. The boys got the same but in a hibiscus gift bag and their hats.
I was worried that this party would not match up to our Princess Royal Ball last year (also on this site), but as we were leaving my daughter told me, "Mommy, That party was Cool!" It was a good party and I hope these ideas will help and save you some time searching.
