We threw our daughter a luau for her 3rd birthday. I sent out colorful invitations with palm trees, including an insert made from clip art featuring a hula dancer & asking each child to
bring a towel, each adult a lawn chair & encouraging island dress. My daughter wore a swimsuit with little hula girls (and the words hula girl on it) purchased at a dept. store as well as
a flower lei, headband & flower bracelets (purchased at our local Card & Party factory). I purchased a CD of "island favorites" from Lilo & Stitch (not the soundtrack)
to play throughout the party. The party was held in our backyard & on our covered patio (complete with a misting system & fans to cool our guests in July). Most of our family members
joined in the spirit by purchasing & wearing Hawaiian shirts, Hawaiian-print pants, some even wore grass skirts. I purchased silk-flower leis for all the female family members, and her
boy cousin wore a beach comber hat with his Hawaiian print trunks. I asked a festively dressed cousin to pass out multicolored plastic leis to the kids to wear & take home. I found
balloons with palm tree and hung lots of island-themed decorations (overhead from beams), including fish, birds, pineapples, island lanters, etc. Balloons marked our mailbox, and a 6-ft.
island totem marked the gate to our backyard to point the way. The table was covered with a hibiscus-print plastic cloth found at HEB, and I sprinkled island confetti (flamingos, pineapple,
suns, palm trees). A large hula dancer decoration made the centerpiece. Food included a half of a watermelon filled with fruit salad and tropical colored cupcakes with picks (palm tree,
umbrella, or flamingo); the birthday girl had all three plus a #3 candle. The punch was pink & fruity. I found hula girl napkins, aqua plates, clear cups & tropical colored utensils.
I found a website that translated names into Hawaiian names and made nametags for all kids, parents & family - they even emailed me unusual ones that weren't listed
(www.alohafriends.com). These said "Hi, my name is _____. My Hawaiian name is _____".
I made posters that said, in Hawaiian, "Happy 3rd Birthday, _______" and strips sayins, in Hawaiian, "Thank you for celebrating with us". These strips encircled pineapple, flamingo or coconut cups that were given as favors, includuing an umbrella straw. All kids wore swim suits and splashed in a large pool with Hawaiian-print pool toys; smaller kids "fished" for plastic fish in a tub or got into the small wading pool. A bubble machine blew bubbles around the party. Games were pin the coconut on the palm tree (with a 6 ft. cardboard tree) and limbo (with an inflatable limbo stick) to "put the lime in the coconut" - prizes were a lightup goldfish keychain and a headband with bobbing flamingos. Other songs included Rock-a-hula, Hawaaian roller coaster ride, pineapple princess, love me tender, and aloha 'oe. We ate and opened gifts, and the kids played in the yard until dark. It was a wonderful day, and we have many wonderful memories from all the photos taken.
