I had promised my son a Luau for his 3rd birthday.
Down the front walk I had tiki torches and Hawaiian music. I scattered sand and shells on the driveway. I made an Aloha sign and hung it on the outside foyer as you walked through. I started on the inside decor by hanging a door curtain in the entry way-it was streamers of foil palms and flamingos. As you made your through the curtain into the foyer of the house, you were greeted by Hawaiian music as well as some Beach Boys hits. Above head was a fishing net filled with lobsters, crabs, star fish and sea horses-this covered the ceiling between the front door and my kitchen. In the dining room, (my table is already a Bombay Mahogany color), I put a green grass table skirt around the table. I attached huge bird and fish shaped balloons as well as beach themed happy birthday balloons. Each guest wore a lei and the birthday boy, his brother and myself wore Hawaiian print shirts, khakis and sandals. In the living room, I hung a big inflatable sun, parrots and a metallic foil palm tree. I made "sand" out of a beige piece of cloth and had inflatable flamingos, beach balls and plastic crabs crawling on the beach. I had ocean sounds in this room. In the play room, I hung light and dark blue crepe paper in alternating rows. I also twisted them and hung the light blue a bit higher than the dark, so that it looked like ocean waves. These were stretched the legnth of the room. I hung foil and tissue paper fish at different lengths by fishing line (from the ceiling) and clear ballons in clusters of three, tied with dark green curling ribbon (uncurled and hanging down between the balloons) so that it looked like bubbles and sea weed. I also had a group of 3 dolphin shaped balloons anchored in front of the window. It really looked like an under the sea scene. The children played a ring toss game in which they had to toss the rings around a flamingo's neck, the limbo, musical chairs, a hula dancing and hula hoop contest and out side we had a sea shell search in the sand box. I also had a hawaiian girl pinata. We had grilled burgers and hotdogs, tropical fruit platter and punch, as well as the traditional party foods (had to keep it simple for the kid's taste). Everyone got a fruit shaped cup with straws. I decorate cakes, but any one could make this one-I made a large round cake and iced it ocean blue and made a wave pattern on the top of it. I made a very small cake and placed it right on the edge of the larger. I made a cocoa (white icing with a little cocoa for color) icing that looked like sand. I placed a 4" "dancing" Hula girl towards the front of the island and staggered behind her was a palm that was a little taller than she. In the very back of the island, staggered on the other side of her, I made a volcano out of the melt it candies. Around the base of the small cake I whipped white icing and placed it unevenly so that it looked like ocean foam. Around the base of the larger cake, I used tubed icing and squiggled sea weed and coral. I bought candles that spelled out the letters for happy birthday and placed them staggered on the larger cake in front of the island. All of the children got a beach scened loot bag with a beach ball, bubbles that had a fish stopper, candy, and whistles.
