For my daughter's sixth birthday in July of 2002, we decided to have a grand luau party. First of all, I made bright invitations on the computer inviting friends to "Kaleigh's
Hawaiian Island" then giving the address,of course! We decorated the backyard with palm trees, tissue paper suns, a large cut-out Hawaiian dancing girl for photo ops.
I made two cakes- one a doll cake with a green "grass" skirt, green bikini top trimmed with orange, and red flowers in her hair and around her neck and a flower bracelet on her wrist. The other cake was a beach and ocean scene made out of a plain 9x13 cake. All the kids received leis to wear and a goody bag with "Hawaiian style" goodies purchased from Oriental Trading. For example, surfboards, Luau mints and flower bracelets. We filled a large pop-up pool up to swim in and a few small "baby" pools with sand from Walmart. We put sand toys in them for the younger ones to play with. A table was set up with sanddollars to decorate with glue and glitter. We put stick-on magnets on the back of them beforehand. This was a favorite! For snacks, we had large goldfish crackers, fruit kebabs, chips and dip. We played pass the coconut and the prizes were inexpensive beachy type prizes found at the dollar store. My husband set up a "snack shack" decorated with luau lIGHTS and palm branches. He made the children "drinks" (Hawaiian punch and cokes) and put it in cool cups with hawaiian type straws ordered from Oriental Trading. We heard from several kids that this was the best party they had been to! My daughter loved it and wants it again. Not to mention we have great pics of my husband posing with his "Hawaiian Woman" ha ha! Great pics of the snack shack, too. Try it, this was a blast!
