My daughter (8) wanted a hula party this year.
I made the hula skirts myself from raffia (super easy) which saved a lot of money. They turned out really nice and I had a lot of compliments from parents. We checked out a "How To Hula" video from the library and had it playing while the guests arrived. Upon arrival, each child received her skirt (beachcomber hats for the boys) and a lei and then went to learn a few hula moves. When everyone was here, we played a luau CD and had hula hoop contests. They really liked this. Wipe Out was their favorite song for this. Then we had other games such as limbo and pass the coconut (hot potato). Another game is hula charades: I made cards ahead of time with different words like sun, water, dolphin, rainbow, etc. on them. Each child draws a card and has to act it out only using her hands. The others guess what she's "saying". Next, I had set up a blue shower curtain on the patio wall and one on the floor beneath it. I put my ironing board (flat) on the bottom one, cutting a slit to fit the exposed ironing board legs into, and hung signs that said "wipe out" and "hang ten". The girls took turns on the "surfboard" and I took a photo of each to take home. The blue background was to look like a wave behind them. These turned out adorable. For refreshments, we had fruit skewers, a beach cake, red Hi C punch with orange slices floating around, macademia nuts, chips and dip. Instead of eating at the table, I gave each guest a beach towel to sit on for a "beach picnic" feel. The girls ended up getting the hula hoops back out and started that activity back up on their own. They decided to see how many friends could fit into one hula hoop. All 11 made it in and it was a cute photo! As treats, they took home their skirt, lei, and candy from a hula dancer pinata. I looked for inexpensive hula hoops for each to take home, but being the middle of January, I couldn't find any. I found nicer ones at Toys R Us, but they were $4 each so I only got two for the game. If you can find the cheap ones at dollar stores, those would make a good treat to take home as well. I didn't do a lot of decorations because our family room already has a beach/Florida feel to it and the pool is right outside that room. We did hang an Aloha sign along the counter where the food was and bought a real pineapple for the centerpiece. Also, my daughter made a posterboard sign that said aloha and drew hibiscus flowers on another one. Each guest took a flower cutout, sign her name, and glued it to the Aloha poster for my daugher's keepsake. It's still hanging in her room, which, by the way, is decorated Hawaiian style.
