For my daughter's seventh birthday we had a Hawaiian Theme party. I had (very inexpensive!) grass skirts for each of the girls and (plastic)lei's which they received as they arrived.
They wore bathing suits as it was warm. First, as they were arriving, we played "I'm going to Hawaii." Like concentration, we sat in a circle and each girl had to complete the phrase, "I'm going to Hawaii and in my suitcase I brought": first girl said something, 2nd girl said the 1st girls item plus something of her own, and the list continued until we went all the way around the circle. Much fun and giggling! Then we did Pineapple bowling. I had 3 pineapples at the end of the slide (from the swingset) and they had to roll a ball down the slide and try to knock over the pineapples. For a craft, we made hair barrettes with large red silk flowers which looked very Hawaiian. I got simple plain large metal barrettes and then we wrapped wire around the flowers and wrapped them around the barrettes. The highlight of the party was when my friend (who knows hula) came and taught the group a simple hula dance. We videotaped it and later watched ourselves hula. The girls loved learning the dance (some took it QUITE seriously!) and I think they loved watching themselves even more! Instead of a "goodie bag" each girl took home her grass skirt, lei, and barrette. For refreshments, I made a "volcano" cake. It was a regular rectangle cake base (the "island") with an ice cream "mountain" piled high, and then "lava" coming down the outside (strawberry and chocolate sauce). Very easy to do, but it looked surprisingly like a volcano!
