My daughter is turning 10 in a couple of weeks.  Since her birthday falls during the week of Mardi Gras, we are doing a childrens Mardi Gras party.  Here's he catch.  We live in NC.  Very few of the kids in our town have even heard of Mardi Gras.  The invitation included a brief explanation of Mardi Gras and some of it's customs.

It's also a costume party.  There will be traditional Mardi music playing in the science museum as the kids enter. I had to find a place with a balcony.  The museum is doing a swamp critter show for us.  The kids are going to make jester hats out of fun foam.

Then we're going to play Fear Factor Cajun style.  The winners will have to eat alligator nuggets, steamed crawfish, and turtle soup.  The brave souls who try will receive a special set of Mardi Gras beads for whatever they try.  The winners will get a gift card.  I tried to think of some food unique to New Orleans to serve.  I came up with shrimp po' boys.

And, of course traditional King Cake for dessert.  And, last but not least the grown-ups will toss beads, doubloons and noise-makers to the merrymakers.
