For my daughter's 5th birthday she wanted an Little Mermaid party.
I began gathering items such as decorations and goody bags fillers a few months prior to get good buys and sale items. My daughter had a mermaid costume she wanted to wear for the party so I made some costumes for the guests. The costumes were easy to make and lasted the lenght of the party. The guests enjoyed the idea of being a mermaid and then got to take the costume home. The costume consisted of the shiny stretch fabric, tulle and purple gauze material that can be bought at Walmart. I measured the length from my daughters waist to mid calf. Then measured her waist and allowed some room for different shaped guests. This would be a wrap skirt. I sewed a ribbon along the top of the skirt so it could be tied in the back. At the mid calf area I pleated the tulle the width of the shiny fabric and sewed it. The tulle material would be the "fin" and it would be the lenth from the mid calf to the floor. For the top of the costume I used the purple gauze material and wrapped it around the breast area of each guest. I had glue gunned scallop shells on this material so it would look like Ariel from the Little Mermaid. One other bonus item was a shell strung on a string to wear around the neck. This symbolized the shell that Ursula used to take Ariels voice. I had the Disney's Print Studio for The Little Mermaid and made invitations and decorations for the party. The invition was a picture of Ariel and stated the information on the party. I then used craft scissors and cut around the edge to give it a decorative look. I used empty water bottles and put the invitation inside the bottle, along with some sand and a few small shells. I also used the print studio to make mailing labels with the little mermaid figure on them. Again using the Print Studio I made place mats for each guests and used clear contact paper to cover them. I made name tags for each guest and used the contact paper on this as well. I even printed a growth chart and took pictures of each guest beside the chart. I will then use these pictures to send in the thank you notes to each child. Coloring pages were printed out so guests could color while waiting for all guests to arrive. The house was decorated with green and blue streamers of various shades, fish banners and fish cut outs. Helium balloons of white and various colors of blue hung from the ceiling with ribbon dangled from them. On the floor were balloons of white and various shades of blue. It really gave the look of being in the sea. After the guests arrived and were dressed as mermaids we made tiaras. Because "Ariel" needs a tiara when she becomes princess. The tiara kits were purchased from the Oriental Trading Co. The kids had fun creating these and espcially seemed to like the jewels they were glueing the the tiara. While waiting for the tiara's to dry the guests nibbled on fish shaped PB&J sandwhiches, cheese shaped fish on a pepperoni slice and cracker, swedish fish candy and fish crackers. After their bellies were satisfied we fished for Mermaids. I decorated a room with helium balloons (white, and various colors of blue). The streamers I bought at the Oriental Trading Co. - they were spirals that dangled about 12 inches from the balloon and gave the effect of seaweed - so you truly felt under the sea. I then hung mermaid barbie dolls from the ceiling just below the balloons. These I bought at a local Dollar Store and were the hallow kind of doll so they hung easy from the ceiling. Each guest had a turn trying to catch a mermaid with a butterfly net. The handle on the butterfly net was bout 4 ft long so it worked perfectly. The guests had a great time participating and encouraged others while waiting. Each guest won a prize which was a FairyTopia Magical Mermaid doll that I bought after Christmas at 75% off the retail price! After a mermaid themed cake and openning presents the guest departed with a goody bag. The goody bag consisted of a pail and shovel. Inside each pail was a stuffed beanbag sea animail, mermaid stickers(Oriental Trading CO.), lollipop with a fish cover(Oriental Trading Co.), individual bag of fish crackers, beach ball, and a book mark and writing pad( Disney Print Studio).
