My 5 year old wanted a Little Mermaid party this year. We found the invitations, plates, cups, and napkins that we needed at Birthday Express.  Decorations:  We blew up clear white balloons in x-small, small, and medium sizes.  We tied the balloons together in a long straight line.  We used about 15 balloons for each line.  We then hung the balloons from the ceiling on either side of the table. When you do this it looks like bubbles. We also used the clown balloons in blue, green, and yellow to make it look like sea weed. We placed shells, beach buckets, a small beach ball, and some blue material around the balloons to represent the beach and water. The Cake:  I made the Little Mermaid character cake.(Wilton Product) I added a chocolate treasure chest that was filled with different colored rock candy.  I also added brown sugar at the base of the cake for the appearance of sand. Craft: The kids made sand art bottles.  We set up two covered card tables. We filled old spice bottles with different colored sand.  We put out small plastic bottles on each table. We made funnels out of white computer paper shaped in a cone.  Clean up was easy! Games/Activities:  We played a musical game, pin the flower on Aerial, and a treasure hunt game.  Musical Game: The kids made a circle and sat on the ground. We put a plastic treasure chest in the center of the circle.  We played the Little Mermaid CD.  The kids passed a crown around. When the music stopped the child put on the crown, then opened the treasure chest, and pick out a prize. Pin the Flower on Aerial:  I had a Little Mermaid poster that was attached to the wall.  I made a paper hibiscus flower for them to use for the game.  Prizes for this game were a real shell for the boys and a gold shell necklace for the girls.  I made the necklace using gold plastic string.  The shell was made from a white wedding scallop shell that was painted gold. Inside we put one gold and silver wedding ring.  This cost maybe 50 cents each.  They looked just like the necklace that Melody wore in Little Mermaid II.    Treasure hunt:  We got two baby pools from the dollar store and put sand and treasures in each one.  The kids took turns digging for treasures. Taking turns made them excited about what each other found.   Piņata:  We had a heart shaped piņata with an Aerial sticker on the face. Party Favors:  We gave sand buckets, diggers, A Little Mermaid book and candy to each of the kids. The kids and the parents had a lot of fun!
