Disney Party

October, 1999

I just gave a Disney-themed party for my 8-year-old daughter.  Her party was planned the weekend after our return from a trip to DisneyWorld and on the Disney Cruise Line, so since we were already paying homage to the Rat King, why not? Since her birthday was near Halloween, I sent out invitations with the following: Dress up as your favorite Disney character, or . . . wear any Disney shirt*  and . . .join us for Kate's birthday! *anything from Ariel to Winnie the Pooh will do! (I copied "Disney" the way they write it) - you could download pictures of characters to go around the inv., but I didn't have a color printer.  We colored the Xerox copies and put Disney stickers on them to seal.  I bought Ariel cups, Cinderella cake plates, Mickey Mouse snack plates, Minnie Mouse gift bags, Jasmine napkins and a cake with Beauty and the Beast.  On the trip we bought the mouse-shaped pencils as favors. Then along with inexpensive candy, toys and note pads we filled up their gift bags.  We decorated the house with all the Disney things we owned: A huge map of Disneyland, a leftover mylar balloon of Minnie, an Aladdin poster, beach towels, T-shirts, dozens of Golden books lining the baseboards, and figurines and happy meal toys from all the movies littered the table, mantel, etc. Kate dressed up like Belle, and the rest of us wore Disney shirts.  I even put on old mouse ears we bought 10 years ago. (I KNEW those would come in handy some day!) When most of the girls arrived, Kate gave them paper and their pencils - they grabbed a book and she showed them how to draw Mickey.  (She learned this on the cruise, but pages from a Disney coloring book would be as good a time-killer).  Then we played "Guess the Movie".  I wrote out the names of different Disney movies on slips of paper. Then it was played like charades, only you could sing or act like a character to make the others guess the movie. After cake and gifts, we played another game where I put the Happy Meal characters they had seen on the table in my husband's (clean!) socks and they had to reach in and feel them to guess the character. That's when they won their goody bags. Some of the girls opted to stay for the slumber party, and we played the Disney Trivial Pursuit game, watched the Parent Trap and Beauty and the Beast. The only "extra" thing we bought was Kate's costume. We would have bought similar party supplies, cake, and favors.  Having such a broad theme made it a lot easier.
