My 11 year old, Karianne, loves dragons. We planned a party with several activities and a few games. INVITATION: Since she is older, we just sent an email invite with dragon pictures on
it--easy to copy off the internet. ACTIVITIES & GAMES: Arrivals started outside with Model Magic, an air dry clay, and created dragons. I was going to judge the best, but that was
impossible, as all turned out adorable! It was hot, so we went to the ice dragon's cave (cooler) for ice cold sodas. We played our first game next outside, Spear the Dragon. Using a
dragon shaped pool float (inflatables can be found at http://www.amazon.com--just click on inflatable dragon) I tied the dragon to a tree and bought foam swords at our local dollar store. The
girls got 7 tries to throw the sword at the dragon and hit it. Scores were kept and prizes were awarded for top score. Swords were collected and used for a later game.
PRIZES (FAVORS): All prizes were dragon themed. Types of prizes I found were: dragon stuffed animals, dragon themed books (check out Amazon.com and you will find pages of age appropriate dragon stories), dragon mini plastic figurines at Michaels and online. PARTY SNACK: We came inside for our a treat next, Dragon's Treasure. I bought 10 different kinds of ice cream and prepared them by using a melon ball scooper to scoop tiny balls into a large glass bowl. (It works best to scoop 2 ice cream flavors at a time into a small bowl and transfer those into the large frozen glass bowl, keeping the rest of the ice creams frozen until ready to scoop them--a few at a time. You don't want any of the balls to melt, and they won't if you do it this way--a bit at a time.) I gave the girls a fluted plastic clear cup (found at the dollar store) and they used their gold colored plastic spoons to scoop the ice cream balls into their cups. The next activity was a painting contest. I found wooden wiggle dragons at Michaels--comes with a wooden dragon, its own paints and a brush. I told the girls to paint any way they want and I would judge on most creative, artistic and scariest. Prizes were awarded for this. (I was going to have the girls paint wooden garden signs with words like Beware: Dragon in Yard, or Dragon's Garden and paint a dragon on each, then judge as I judged above; but I saw these wooden dragons at Michaels and couldn't resist!) Next was a game called Dragon's Lair. I created a cave out of our dome climber by covering it with a tarp. (You can also use a large box.) Inside I hid a variety of Groovy Girl dolls (or you can use Barbies or Polly Pocket dolls) and girls had to use a claw toy we own to find as many dolls as possible and rescue the maidens" from the dragon's cave. (An unfolded hanger with hook end will also work.) Inside were also other types of toys and if a child got one of those she was out. I counted score for the number of maidens saved for each player. Note: this game takes a long time to play. You may wish to paint the area with black circles to resemble scorched earth from the dragon. I didn't as my child is too old. Our next activity Dragon's Loot was to make shining beaded bracelets using beads from Michaels and Magic Stretch a plastic stretching string. Should be 8-9" long using 30 beads per child depending on bead size. Knot 3-4 times very tight. A square knot works best. Start with tape on one end to hold beads in place. CAKE: I made a dragon cake and we ate that and opened gifts next. Three sites for cake ideas are: http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/fire-breathing-cake-687620/ http://hubpages.com/hub/Dragon-Birthday-Cakes http://sdbytracy.com/dragoncake.htm Last those sugared up girls went outside for their final game Knights and Ice Dragons. Knights used the swords and ice dragons used a mini water pistol. Each team had to try and "get" the other team's members by shooting the gun stabbing or throwing the sword. Weapons could not be stolen. When hit girls had to put a colorful round sticker where they got struck. It was hilarious to see them all "stickered up!" Time was called and stickers were counted on each team. Those with the least amount of stickers got a prize and those that lost got to keep the water guns! I bought enough swords for each girl to keep one. Each girl went home with a sword clay dragon they made painted wooden dragon beaded bracelet and prizes they had won. Excellent party! Takes 4 hours for all of the activities listed. These are very age appropriate for 9-11 year old girls."
