Flamingos Party 3yr

May 2006

Charlotte in Rochester, Michigan, USA

My 3-year old loves pink flamingos!  She loved them before she was 2 years old, and the excitement has yet to end.  So, for her 3rd birthday, I decided to make the party theme flamingos. First, I put her in her Halloween costume (a plush pink flamingo, of course) and took many digital pictures of her holding up her three fingers.  I chose the best picture and went to Shutterfly.com to make birthday party invitations. They read "Flying Pink Flamingos!  Ava's Turning Three!" along with the party particulars and a cute poem. It was a little girl party, so we asked the guests to wear pink. Through Oriental Trading, local dollar stores and other places, I found a bunch of different kinds of yard ornaments with flamingos -- plastic stakes, parking reflectors, plant sticks with flying wings, whirly birds, etc.  I put them, along with flamingo flags, everywhere outside in the yard and around the house. For other decorations, we used various shades of pink balloons inside and out. Before the party, I found small canvas tote bags and iron on flamingo patches. I ironed the patches on and used puffy paint to write each guest's name on the tote bag.  As the guests arrived, they could decorate their tote with fabric markers.  Later, I would fill the totes with their goody bag gifts and they could take those home (goodies included a flamingo shaped straw, a flamingo squirt gun, a flamingo lollipop, flamingo coloring sheets and crayons, pinata candy, etc.). After all the guests arrived and finished their totes, we had a "flamingo hunt." I bought hundreds of pink flamingo party picks and stuck them in marshmallows.  Then I placed them all over the house.  The youngest guests were able to get a jump start, but each one had to "hunt" for 10 flamingos. They gathered them and either ate the marshmallows or put them in a ziplock bag to take with them. After that, we played flamingo ring toss. I found a plastic blow up flamingo with four plastic rings through Oriental Trading; bought two sets and had a race with two teams. Then the last indoor craft was my favorite -- creating flamingos out of pink cotton candy!  We had a sample to show the guests. There were bowls of various candies -- Twizzler sticks for legs, curly licorice for the curvy neck, mini chocolate chips for eyes, sour gummy worms for the beak -- they could use whatever they wanted and they created their flamingo on a paper plate. We took a picture of everyone's concoction and then they could either eat it or take it home. We finally went outside for two games.  Of course, there was a flamingo pinata, and then we took a couple of the yard stakes and had a goal made out of them. The girls took turns kicking a ball through the goal, just to burn off some energy. Back inside it was time for cake and ice cream.  I baked a cake in a 12x18 sheet cake pan and cut it into four pieces. I assembled it to look like a flamingo, then iced it pink with a gray beak.  Twizzlers once again served as the legs.  We also served pink lemonade and strawberry ice cream.  After this was time for presents, where Ava received many stuffed flamingos and cute flamingo clothes. The tote bags were complete at this point and filled, so the guests took those and their crafts home with a balloon. It was a great flamingo party, and Ava's already talking about having another one next year!
