We are of Greek origin and our daughter loves watching the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" every day. So we are planning a "Big Fat Greek Birthday Party" for her
upcoming birthday. It will be for both kids and adults and will be a nice mix of both Greek and non-Greek friends. We are making invitations to suit the theme (Please Come to MY BIG FAT GREEK
BIRTHDAY PARTY!), decorating plain blue party hats with the Greek flag, hanging blue and white pennants everywhere and using lots of blue and white balloons. Table centerpieces will be
cardboard Parthenon models and mini flags. In the corner, we are creating our own "Greek Isle" by painting a mural on plywood (ocean, island, whitewashed houses, fishing
boats, etc...) and in front of it, we will be making a "beach" complete with sand (glued on to keep the room clean) where we will display the gifts. We are planning to have lots of
Greek finger foods (mini kebabs, tzatziki, mini greek salads in small ketchup containers, stuffed grape leaves, tiropites, pita wedges, etc.) as well as some standby favorites for the kids
like bagel pizzas, mini hot-dogs and chips.
We will also serve Greek pastries along with birthday cake to the adults. Lots of Greek music will be played throughout. We will play musical chairs (of course using the Greek music), "guess the meaning of the word", Greek-inspired scavenger hunt, wordsearch, pin the moustache on the Greek man, where in Greece is Carmen Santiago? and we are making a compilation of our vacation videos from Greece to show if there is time. As an activity for the younger children, I have printed Greek postcard scenes which they can color and a plywood fishing boat model for the boys to paint. The girls will have paper dolls in traditional Greek costumes. Goody boxes (lt blue of course) will contain some Greek candy, stickers, their takehome craft and perhaps a Greece Tshirt if my budget allows. The grown-ups will get a small Greek coffee cup (like an espresso cup) filled with Greek candy. We are very excited at this opportunity to share some of our culture with our friends and give our daughter a party everyone will remember!
