My son wanted a Doctor Who Party for his birthday.
It was difficult as I usually use your site for ideas and as it is an english show there was not a lot anywhere! So I had to use my own creative mind! INVITATIONS - Using blue paper I photocopied my own drawing of the TARDIS (blue phone box) that opened up to the details of the party. Even in Australia Doctor Who is not that" well known so I put the details of the party and that it was dress up so they could look at the site for ideas. DECORATIONS -We held the party in our garage and I had Painted the door to look like the tardis. I had also painted a refridgerator box to be the tardis. The kids had their photo's taken with this later. My son actually made a K9 robotic dog with his remote control car and a box and alfoil! I had stuck paper cups up on the wall to look like the inside of the tardis and filled a glove with goop and stuck it in a jar with coloured water..(DR WHO FANS WILL UNDERSTAND ALL THIS!!) I had some chicken wire and made it into a tube with a rope light around it just like the middle of the Tardis. As it was christmas I has lots of star ropes from the dollar shop and cut them to hang from the roof like space.. We had a small tv with the sound off playing a dvd of doctor who. (for those who did not know who he was) GAMES - we played the chocolate game as my kids love this. We incorporated it into the theme by making the clothing article Doctor Who glasses and coat. The chocolate game is simple cheap and fun everyone wins and there are no prizes required! A large block of chocolate the clothes and 2 dice are needed. Take turns at rolling the dice when a double is rolled you need to put on the glasses and jacket (in our case - we have also used beanie and scarf - anything will do to make it more challenging..) then sit on a chair with the chocolate on your lap on a plate and using a knife and fork eat the chocolate the rest are still rolling the dice and as soon as someone else rolls a double you take off the props and they put them on. Sometimes they are not even able to get to eat the chocolate! Each child had their own plastic fork! 2nd game we played was a simple aliens vs good guys water fight The children decided on this and then had no dry clothes to put on!! but had fun anyway. I had made up some CD's and the kids just danced and enjoyed themselves. I find 12yr olds don't want too much structure to a party! COSTUMES - As it was dress up I had sent out a note with some of the episodes that were easy dress ups. I went as Agatha Christie and my husband was Santa Claus as these have appeared in episodes! There were lots of different dress ups from simple to very elaborate one child made himself a full Dalek costume! For those who did not like dressing up it was as simple as a red jacket and coming as Martha. PARTY SNACKS - Any type of Alien food is good. We had a table with confetti stars alien biscuits and chips. We had a sausage sizzle (BBQ sausage on bread ) for lunch No plates required and easy clean up! CAKE - I made a flat cake and decorated it with a Dalek. I used Jaffa's to start and put them in lines and then just piped icing around that to create a Dalek with sour coke bottle lollies for the eye thingys! I did not give out party favors as it is not necessary for 12 yr olds they had lots of fun and plenty of lollies at the party. If I did give out party favors it would have been badges that I saw on ebay with DOCTOR WHO sayings on them but decided to save the money. The other thing that I do for my kids parties is attach a note saying -Although it is customary to give a gift when invited to a birthday party in this case it is not necessary or required. If you feel you must give a gift $5 in a card would be more than appropriate.- I do this because I enjoy planning parties and my children definitely have enough toys. When my children are invited to a party I usually give $10 in a card otherwise it becomes very expensive. The kids usually appreciate the money more than a cheap present that will only be thrown out!"
