Drive-In Movie Party 5yr

January 2008

Jennifer in Canton, GA, USA

For my daughter's 5th birthday, we decided to have a drive-in movie themed party with her as the star (of course!).  I enlarged a clip art picture of a director's scene board with the following: Light'sAction! _______'s fifth birthday is the coming attraction!"  Now showing at _________ cinemas. Matinee at 7:00 on _______.  Call for reservations. (Here I put the RSVP info).  I had cut the top bar of the scene board off and attached a picture of my daughter holding up 5 fingers with the memo for the guests to bring their Power Wheels or their bikes for the drive-in movie. For decorations I bought a roll of red tablecloth plastic and ran it up the drive-way for a red carpet all the way from the street to the garage.  I placed gold and silver balloons at intervals down the "red-carpet". I took pictures of each guest as they walked up the red carpet to use for the Thank you notes. Inside the garage I had set up a table with a yellow plastic table cloth and a huge gold star (made from gold poster board) for each child.  We did their handprints on the stars and I wrote each "actor/actress" name on their star.  For food- we had movie snacks-popcorn in red/white striped boxes I got at Target and movie candy (junior mints bottlecaps hot tamales etc) I found at the dollar store. For the cake I had a local bakery make a cake that looked like a box of popcorn. (For our family party the next day we used the same theme but the cake was a photo cake of my daughter-the same photo I used on the invites-that read "With love to all my fans!") The highlight of the party was the drive-in movie!  We hung a white plastic tablecloth in our garage and used an in-focus projector and our laptop to show a movie. We had planned on showing it outside but at the time we had our party it wasn't dark enough so we did it in the garage so we could make it dark. The kids loved lining their bikes and power wheels up for the movie!  We knew they wouldn't sit still for a long movie so we played a 30 minute episode of The Muppet Show-which they loved!!!  Then they rode their bikes and power wheels all in the driveway and around the house! The goody bags looked like popcorn bags with a package of microwave popcorn a cookie with the number 5 and small boxes of movie candy. We had a blast!  After the success of this party we decided to start having neighborhood movie nights under the stars!  :-)   "
