Pajama Movie 8yr

February 2005

Jenny in Seattle, Washington, USA

My daughter Jordan turned 8 this February and wanted to have a pajama/movie party at our house(the pj's were a compromise since I said no to a slumber party).  Since she invited 17 girls, I had to make sure the party was really thought through to ensure all of the kids stayed involved and the party in control.  Jordan also really wanted to have a treasure hunt as part of the party. We sent the invitations out 2 weeks ahead. The invitations consisted of a "movie ticket" I created using clip art graphics of a movie camera and a bag of pop corn.  On the front of the ticket, I typed in large letters "Admit One" and then underneath, "Special Event."  Under"special event" I typed in a smaller font the date and time of the party.  This ticket was placed on top of the party invitations my daughter made with her scrapbook kit.  I included a pack of microwave popcorn and encased it all in a cellophane gift bag secured with a name tag. My daughter and I hand delivered all of the invitations. The kids arrived at 6:15pm in their pajama's with pillow and blanket in tow.  Each girl had to pick a printed tag ( I used mailing lables)out of the basket.  Each tag contained the name of a celebrity(Hillary Duff, etc), cartoon or movie character (Princess Mia, Scooby Doo, etc) or Music personality (JoJo, Raven, etc.)I then placed the tag on the girl's back and she had to go around to the other guests and ask questions to figure out who she was. This game was a huge hit and great ice breaker.  The name tag also included which table to sit at for dinner and what team she would be on for the treasure hunt. I then served pizza for dinner.  When dinner was over, the girls divided into their teams and I explained how the treasure hunt would work. Not wanting to have 17 girls run through my house, I thought of a way which would meet my daughter's wish and be a good group mixer. I created a word jumble entitled, "Things Jordan Likes-Movies, Music, School."  I jumbled the following 6 words- Cinderella Story, Princess Mia, Radio Disney, her school name, Eager Reader, Scooby Doo. After these words were unscrambled, the high lighted letters from the solved words needed to be unscrambled to solve the final clue-"If you open the door, I guarantee it won't be a bore" with the answer being "basement closet." The first group to solve the entire sheet was able to find the treasure. The treasure consisted of a variety of items purchased from Oriental Trading Company and candy. The girls made present lei's with the items.  To make the present lei's, I purchased organza tube ribbon from Papermart.com. I precut the ribbon to 36" lengths and tied a knot at one end. A few items were placed in the tube ribbon then cinched with a ribbon. This pattern was continued until the tube was filled up. The lei was then tied around the girls neck. (tip-have each girl's booty presorted in the treasure chest to minimize the chaos of sorting the items)Each girl went home with her present lei. Jordan then opened her presents, the kids danced a little, and then moved back upstairs to watch "Garfield" and eat popcorn.  When the movie was over, the kids sang Happy Birtday, had cake, and then it was time to go home.  All in all, it was simple and inexpensive concept and the kids really had a good time.  Total party time was 3 hours.
