Last year I had a murder mystery party it was designed for 6-8 people and was directed at 10 yrs+. My dad decorated the living room.  It was supposed to be indian feeling so we lit incence candles and we all dressed up according to the part we had been given.  The game package that we picked up included a tape which tells how to play the game and solve the death of a person who was supposed to be attending your dinner.  Everyone at the party enjoyed it tremendously and lot of them found different types of games similar and held them at their houses.  I think that it is important to create the right atmosphere at the party and hopefully it will be a night to remember!!!!!!!
