We had a Wizard of Oz birthday party for our 4 year old daughter. For the invitation, I scanned a picture of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion from a book, took a photo of my daughter
in her Dorothy costume and superimposed her over the Dorothy in the picture. We made the Witch of the East's legs so it looked like our house landed on her, and everyone entered through
rainbow streamers in the doorway, up the yellow brick road made from a roll of yellow plastic table cloth. When the girls arrived, they made Glinda's wands. Then they went upstairs which was
decorated all green as the Emerald City. In addition to using many ideas found on this web site - tossing an apple at a tree, playing pass the ruby slipper, and pin the heart on the Tin Man -
my older daughter (age 6) set up the Emerald City Beauty Shop in her bedroom, and painted the little girls' nails.
For the last game, I painted a Wicked Witch on aluminum foil (two sheets taped together side by side) with water colors (using very little water), hung it in the bathtub, filled a bucket with water, and the girls lined up and took turns splashing water on the witch with a samll cup. The melting effect was very dramatic and the girls took many turns. In fact, after the party I found my 4 year old filling the bucket again so she could keep melting the witch. The cake featured the yellow brick road, the Emerald City Castle made with a castle cup cake pan, and I cut out and laminated the picture of my daughter as Dorothy and the other characters from the invitation and put them on" the yellow brick road. I also made "Melted Witch cookies" green bead necklaces Wizard of Oz stickers baggies with animal crackers and stickers that said "Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my!" and each child also took home one of the foam apples I purchased for the apple toss."
