I had a lot of fun planning this one. Using MS Word, I created an invitation using clipart (colorful test tubes) and word art Join us for some EXPLOSIVE fun at xxx's MAD SCIENCE 7th Birthday
Party!" outlined/framed in black and cut out. Each were approx 4.5 x 4.5 square shaped. Since his birthday is in October Halloween-like colors worked perfectly - think orange lime green
purple silver and black. DECORATIONS: Silver table cloths to mimic lab tables; I used random glass vases from around the house and filled them water a few drops of food coloring and added
eyeball ping pong balls and creepy plastic critters and skeletons (all purchased from a dollar store); Caution tape as streamers; I handmade a birthday banner - large green circles with black
letter inside - using a creepy font downloaded for free from dafont.com and used jute to join the letters and to hang it up; lots of balloons in the colors mentioned above; I also had a candy
buffet to match the color scheme - gummy brain mold (found at Target) beaker-shaped containers with bone candy inside (Target!) large lime green gumballs gummy worms test tubes in a stand
(purchased from ebay) filled with small candy pumpkin orange peeps on a stick etc.
GAMES/Experiments: Geodesic Marshmallows - used marshmallows and toothpicks to create a sculpture. Tallest to not fall over won a small prize (from Dollar Store); Copper (Penny) Caper - turning dull pennies shiny again; Go with the Flow - uses a water bottle soap and food coloring to make a snow globe-like thing. I prepped these before so kids only had to add food coloring of their choice (and then we super-glued the lids closed to prevent any spills. Some work but all the kids loved them and took them home. Smallest water bottles work best!); Hoopster - makes a paper airplane out of straws index cards and tape (also prepped before hand). The kids could not believe how far these would sail through the air! We had a contest to see who could throw it the farthest; Bubble Bombs - made out of water vinegar and baking soda. Kids also loved watching this explode. Plan to do this one over and over!; Outrageous Ooze was done last ... like oobleck. Very messy but the kids loved it! All of these experiments were found on www.exploratorium.edu website. FOOD: After all that work I kept it simple. Pizza! And lots of snacks and appetizers. I also turned small powdered donuts into eyeballs by adding a gummy lifesaver and a chocolate chip - simple and cute! CAKE: My very talented sister made a beaker-shaped cake complete with "smoke" (cotton candy) rising out of the top. GOODIE BAGS: Lime green plastic bags filled with eyeball gumballs test tube candy (like pixie sticks) and a few others things I can't recall sealed with a mad scientist (clip art) thank you for coming sticker I made. My son declared it his best birthday party ever! I'll take that as a compliment considering I spent less than $100 on this party. A really great party our family and friends are still talking about. I may never be able to top this one!"
