For my 16th birthday my parents came up with a hoedown.  We live on 5 acres but it could be done anywhere. My dad got hay bales and set them out in the back yard.  Some were to sit on, some were spread out in the middle of other hay bales, so there was plenty of places for people to sit.  We strung up white lights to keep the area lit and having a party atmosphere. The invitations were given to friends and family on red & white checkered napkins put in plain white envelopes.  Everyone was invited to come dressed comfortably in jeans and t-shirts, (boots and cowboy hat were optional). Everyone received a red&white hankie when they arrived to stick in their pocket. The plates, napkins tableclothes,etc. came from a dollar store in the color red or checkered.  All my friends had a blast having hay fights and hayrides and just sitting around laughing and talking. Although country music was my Dad's choice of music, it was appropriate and we had fun listening and dancing the electric slide. We had a bar-B-Q with hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings. There were plenty of chips and soda in our old picnic table. The cake was designed by my Mom in oblong muffin pans and set up to look like individual hay bales. It was great fun for everyone!
