INVITATIONS:
For the invitations I downloaded a picture and edited it in SnagIt to place my daughter's picture in the frame, then we printed some out at the local Walmart just to hand out to a few of her schoolmates, for everyone else we used pingg.com which is a free invitation service that lets you upload your own template and show your "wish list" if you have one, which our daughter did at Toys R Us. This was a really cost effective way to get the word out.
DECORATIONS:
We found some coloring pages of Sleeping Beauty online, and used an free online software called Rasterbator (http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/) that lets you magnify the pictures to be whatever size you want, and then print them out on standard 8.5 x 11" paper and tape them together to make a mural. This is really useful if you're making each room a theme which what we had originally planned to do. We printed these taped each picture on some cardboard backing and painted it. We also found some templates online (http://dailycoloringpages.com/coloring-pages-of-disney-characters/disney-princess-coloring-pages/disney-princess-halloween-pumpkin-carving-patterns/) where you could carve Sleeping Beauty pumpkins. We used these to carve Sleeping Beauty watermelons and used them as centerpieces with fruit kabobs stabbed into the fleshy part of the watermelon on top. Each table got one.
ACTIVITIES: We didn't have any scheduled activities other than the schedule of the day which was food followed by games followed by piņata followed by cake and lastly followed
by opening presents.
GAMES:
This was the fun part. We used a lot of the existing games our daughter had and just redressed them to fit the theme. Then we had each one manned by a volunteer (friends and family) and the kids got tickets based on how well they played each game. Each game was worth about 3-12 tickets. The kids then took those tickets and cashed them in for goodies at the concession stand.
1 - Slay the Dragon: A dragon dartboard using soft plastic golf balls wrapped in strips of Velcro cardboard for the dragon (painted with a dragon image to look like Maleficent) and an
old backing of a couch for the target with the lines drawn to really look like a dartboard. This wound up looking like Maleficent (as a dragon) holding the target standing between the castle.
My brother hand-painted it but if needed it could have been magnified with Rasterbator and then cut out and painted on too.
2 - Feed the Animals: Bean bag toss to feed the
forest animals depending on the size of the whole was the quantity of the tickets. We used a chipmunk/squirrel character from the movie and cut holes into cardboard in different sizes then
painted acorns next to each hole with the number of tickets each hole was worth (i.e. Acorn x 4).
3 - Pin the Kiss: We made this out of paper using Rasterbator to magnify the
picture then painted it and pinned it on some cardboard. We were going to have the kids pin a felt kiss onto her mouth and depending on the square it would indicate the amount of tickets but
we ran out of room in the yard and just wound up using it as decoration in the living room.
4 - Fairy Knockdown: This was to emulate the 3 Fairies since there were 3
tries. We used heavy tin cans from some canned pineapple and painted them black with Maleficent's face on them. Then we sewed some felt together with beans inside in the color of each
fairy (Red Blue Green) to throw at the cans. The number of cans knocked down determined the size or value of the prize.
5 - Ring of Fire: This started out as get the ring
on sleeping beauty but the paper mache didn't turn out quite as expected so we just painted it black cut out some nails and used it as the Dragon's Hand. Depending on if the toss makes it
around the finger they get tickets the more they get on the same finger the more tickets it is worth. For the more seasoned paper mache veterans they could make this sleeping beauty's hand
and ring toss onto her ring finger which was what we originally wanted to do.
6 - Blackbird bowling: Using our existing bowling set we create sock puppets to cover the bowling
pins and make them all black like the Blackbird. It just took a package of children's black socks some tacky glue some googly eyes and some foam sheets and we converted it to a new
game.
COSTUMES: My daughter dressed up as Sleeping Beauty and all of the other kids were encouraged to come in costume just for fun.
PARTY SNACKS: We
had Concession Stand where the kids cashed in the tickets they were winning from the games they were playing. We took some mini-chalkboards and wrote on them what the concession stand
had stocked for the kids to see and buy and on the individual candy jars put labels on them indicating how many tickets each candy was worth. We also got some clearance popcorn buckets with
all the princesses on them so the kids got to select from Caramel Butter or Cheese Popcorn. We own a cotton candy machine so we also had Cotton Candy in Blue and Pink (to match the
dresses in the movie). We used our "plug in" coffee machine to heat water and had instant cocoa in the bucket and instant coffee (for the adults) since it was a bit cold.
We put marshmallows and creamer in the Coffee or Hot Chocolate to give it a twist. For the Pinata we found a deal on a large Sleeping Beauty shaped one for $15. The cool thing
about these big ones is that they use a lot of carboard and it compartmentalizes the inside of the piņata giving you 1 piņata in each leg 1 in the torso and 1 in the head for a total of 4
piņata's in one. So in short we filled all of it and it took about an hour to get it all out which the big kids seemed to really love. Some of the smaller kids (my daughter included) were way
too busy on the trampoline working off their sugar rush to care about getting any more candy they were satisfied with the loot they got at the concession stand (one kid had over 100 tickets
he had won).
CAKE/ FAVORS: For favors we had the Goodie Bags. To make them we just took a picture of my daughter cropped out the background (you can do that with Word 2010
now) and posted it onto a pretty sunshine background to make an icon then printed it out on the 2" by 2" labels you can buy at your local office supply store. Then we made a
template on word and printed our template on colored cardstock and cut out to about 6" in width. We took sandwich size clear bags and filled them with candy then just stapled the
cardstock to the goodie bags. If you measure it right the cardstock should look the same width as the bags giving it that custom made look. For the Desserts we had cupcakes and a
cake. My daughter had fallen in love with the the Barbie cakes so we got an idea off the web and then created a fondant masterpiece using her existing Sleeping Beauty barbie. We
also had individual cupcakes with blue frosting decorated with Sleeping Beauty toothpicks (just a circular label printed with a Sleeping Beauty picture then stuck to each other with a
toothpick in between). "
