Survivor Party 9 & 10yr

July 2011 x

Carol in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

This birthday party was a joint party for my 9yr old son and 10yr old daughter.  Their birthdays are 1yr and 2 weeks apart.  This theme was a hit with both ages.  They each invited 7 friends and teamed off against each other.    Decorations:  We set up canopy 2 tents and placed tiki torches outside the entrances. I purchased 3 meters of inexpensive plain colored fabric.  I cut 8 bandanas from each color and the left was left to make a team flag.  I printed of a survivor logo and hot glued it to each flag.  This was a 4 hour party and time frame is detailed below.   Activities:  12:00 – Guests arrive, go to team tents and work on bandanas and tribal face paint.  Once all team mates are present then work together to make tribal flag and team name. Picture taken of each team in front of tent with flag. One team had extra time and they went in the bush searching for rhubarb leaves and twigs to enhance their team tent.  1:00 - Begin Challenges •Soak it Up  - Sit two buckets out ~10' apart. Do this for each team.  Fill one with water and place 4-6 sponges in the water bucket. Arrange 1/2 team members at each bucket. Kids throw soaked sponges at their team mates.  Team mates ring sponges out into empty bucket and throw sponges back to be presoaked.  1st team to fill their empty bucket wins.  Gobble Gobble (food tasting challenge) •Roasted Centipede & Bumble Bee Backs (bran buds & sugar crisp) in Yogurt •Seagull Poop (raisins & mulberry in vanilla pudding) •Snake Skin Surprise (dried mango in choc. pudding) •Cockroach Stew (walnut halves in gravy mix) Line kids up side by side.  Each child handed a cupcake line with above tasty treat inside.  Tell them what you've named it.  Kids usually squirm at this point and try to pry out the true ingredients. Stay tough and don't tell! Score one point for every team member that eats their challenge •Freeze Your Socks Off 2 baby swim pools filled with water. Set one block of ice in each pool and allow to melt.  Toss 30 or so marbles into each pool. Teams gather around their pool, each placing one foot in pool. 1st team to pick up all their marbles with their toes and place in bucket beside pool wins!  •Eat A Jelly Bean:  Place jelly beans on paper plates. Cover with plenty of whip cream.  Team members (hands behind backs) must eat the whip cream, find the candy and eat it first.  First team to have everyone eat the jelly beans wins! •Puzzle Challenge Buy 2 cheap dollar store puzzles, fewer than 48 pces.  Put puzzles together in advance, flip over and write instructions to a challenge or scavenger hunt. Put pces back in boxes.  Teams have to race to make puzzle and read the clue. Clue should lead them to a hunt. Our hunt was to go down by the lake and find as many pre-hidden sea shells as possible.  •Sea Shell Search Hide a variety of shells. We hid 3 different colors, 20 of each.  We also hid 3 conk shells.  Kids gathered shells and when time was up teams sorted all types.  Award 1 pt/shell. The catch was if they found the conk of matching color it vetoed the shells found of that color.  One bright colored star fish was also hid and was worth 25 pts.  This was great and could end up with either team ahead but most children assumed because they gathered the most they won...until they found out their conks were a disadvantage.  Snacks 2:00 - Mini pizzas and juice. English muffins with pizza sauce and cheese.  Some with pepperoni. 10 minutes under broil and you have a quick and easy lunch.  My kid's favorite!  2:30    Free Swim & Play  3:30 - Cake/Ice Cream & Gift Opening Each team went back to their tents for this.  4:00 - Pick up  Favors: Loot bags of course were filled with gummy worms, plastic bugs, etc I used paper bags and pasted a Survivor logo on each one. All kids left agreeing that this was their best party yet.
