Hogsmeade Halloween 7yr - Hogswort on Map

Runner Up

July 2011 x

Sabrina in East Hampton CT USA

My seven year old son is obsessed with Harry Potter.  So we decided to throw him a Hogsmeade themed Halloween party.

Invitation: I created a Hogsmeade permission slip (to visit the village of Hogsmeade) for each child.  The permission slip read:  This document hereby serves to state the aforementioned third-year students of Hogwaarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is permitted to visit the village of Hogsmeade (my address) on October 18, from 3:00-5:00 and with the signature of the undersigned parent or guardian.  Please rsvp by owl (or muggle telephone) by no later than October 11th. The invitation had each child's name printed at the top and the Hogwarts school crest on the bottom.   It was signed: Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore (Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Federation of Wizards).  This was taken directly from the book.  I then went to the grocery store and bought white helium filled balloons.  I used a permanent marker to draw the face of an owl on each balloon and cut out orange feet (to tie to the bottom).  I then rolled up the permission skip and tied it to the owl balloon.  We hand delivered each invitation (we live in a small town and all of my son's friends are within walking distance).

Decorations: DRIVEWAY:  I used chalk to draw a Platform 9 and 3/4 sign at the bottom of the driveway and placed a Hogsmeade Station sign on the front porch.  The porch was also decorated with a small bench and lamp posts.

FOYER: I decorated the foyer to look like a town square.  There were more lamp posts, as well as signs, flyers and articles from the Daily Prophet.  I got most of the flyers/articles straight from the books.  A couple of examples are: (1) A sign up sheet for Apparition Lessons (I signed Harry, Ron, Hermione;s names - as well as a few others); (2) A sign advertising U-No-Poo (from the Weasley twins); (3) A wanted poster of Sirius Black; (4) A Hogwarts School Supply list; (5) The pamphlet from the Ministry of Magic: Protecting your home and family against dark forces; (6) Skiving Snackbox advertisement; (7) Various Articles: a) The Weasley family trip to Egypt; b) Black still at Large and c) Scenes of Terror at the Quidditch World Cup.  You can fins most of these online - just use google.  I printed them out and then soaked each paper in tea to give it an old world feel. I sent up the end of the foyer as Gringott's Bank.  I hung a picture of the head goblin on the wall, as well as the Bank's warning to thieves (again, taken from the book).  I had a basket of galleons sitting on a small table (I printed up the galleons online and glued them to plastic pirate money (144 for $1 at the dollar store).  I also made each child a money bag by cutting scrap fabric into a circle and simply sewing gold ribbon all the way around the circumference (leaving long ends).  When you pull the ends together, the bag forms.

LIVING ROOM: My living room was a combination of Eeylops Owlery and the Post Office.  I wrapped different sized boxes in brown paper (you can use brown paper bags from the grocery store - FREE!!!) and tied each one with cord.  They were stacked all along the fireplace.  I used my son's stuffed owls (believe it or not - he has about twenty five) as decorations.  There was also a store sign as well as an owl price list hanging on the wall.  We played Pass the Parcel" in this room.  Each time the music stopped whoever was holding the package got to keep it and that child was out.  We continued until everyone had a prize.  The packages were filled with little owl figurines (also from the dollar store).  After the game was over the first place winner received three galleons the second place winner won two and everyone else won one.  The kids loved putting their money in their money bags.  Each child also received a bag of m&ms with a picture of Hedwig and a tag that was labelled Hedwig poop - they loved this!

GARAGE: Quality Quidditch Supplies.  Part of the garage was set up like a Quidditch store. I had signs and price lists haging on the wall and origami paper snitches hanging from the ceiling. I made Quidditch robes out of tee shirts (red with yellow trim - Gryffindor; yellow with black trim - Hufflepuff; green with gray trim- Slytherin and blue with gray trim - Ravenclaw).  I bought three tee shirts at the dollar store and cut them straight up the middle in the front.  I then hot glued ribbon (also from the dollar store) along where I cut the front.  The tee shirts were men's larges so they fit the kids just like the robes from Hogwarts.  I also downloaded a plastic canvas pattern from the Internet and created house crests and sewed them to the front of the robes.  My son and I made Quidditch pads from cardboard and string and had them placed at stations in the garage.  The kids were split into teams of three and we had a relay race to see who could get their teams dressed the fastest.  Everyone received more gold from Gringotts and the kids were able to keep their robes.  The rest of the garage was filled with tables shelves and signs to represent other stores in the village.  We moved on to Honeydukes where the kids tried to guess how many Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans were in a jar - the winner kept the jar and everyone received more galleons.

FOYER: We played: Place Hogwarts on the Map (pin the tail on the donkey. I drew a giant sized map of Hogsmeade (also downloaded from the Internet).  The students were given small castles (I actually found castle shaped sticky notes and we used these - so much easier than drawing 12).  Each child received galleons after playing.

DINING ROOM/KITCHEN: Three Broomsticks/Hogshead.  I hung a giant stuffed pig over the window (kitchen) to represent Hogs Head.  I hung three broomsticks over the window in the dining room to represent the Three Broomsticks.  The table had a white plastic table cloth with black cheese cloth over top.  All of the plates cups silverware were silver.  I used black glittered skull heads as a centerpiece.  On the wall I hung a picture of Madam Rosmerta (from the Internet) and hung shrunken apple heads from the doorway.

FOOD: We served typical English pub food for the adults (Shepherds Pie sausage rolls Professor Snape's Toadstools (Stuffed mushrooms))  For the kids we had mummy toes (little hot dogs wrapped in shredded tortillas); sandwiches cut into various shapes; bat wings (chicken wings); maggots and worms (macaroni and cheese) as well as other snacks (all with a creepy label).  I also printed the recipe for butterbeer off of the Internet (we had adult and children's versions) For dessert I made a wizard's hat by baking several round cakes and stacking different sizes to for a hat shape.  I used an ice cream cone for the very top.

KITCHEN: The kitchen was decorated using black white and silver.  I hung pictures of Albus Aberforth and Ariana Dumbledore on the cabinets.  A menu for each restaurant was also hanging on the wall.

GARAGE: I then handed out the rest of the galleons to the kids and we headed back to the garage where they were able to shop in all of the stores. Each child was given an eyeball shaped shopping bag. 1)  We had Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop: we had owl notebook paper (packs of 10 sheets - printed off the Internet); Wizards puzzles and feather pens and pencils. 2) Dervish and Banges: There were jars filled with a variety of potion ingredients (bezoars - raisinets; billy wig parts - licorice bites; rat tails - licorice strings; chopped tube worms - chopped gummy worms…)  We also had Instant Darkness Powder (Fun Dips) and Remberalls (glittery bouncing balls). 3) Honeydukes: Boxes of Fizzing Whizbees (sugar filled beetles); Ice Mice (I used mice candy molds and put a drop of peppermint in the chocolate); Lemon Drops (lemon heads); Chocolate Frogs (dipped gummy frogs in chocolate); Droobles Gum (gum balls); Acid Pops (blow pops dipped in pop rocks). 4) Zonkos: Pigmy puffs (hot glued feather boas to styrofoam balls - each one had its one adoption certificate); Fanged Flyers (Frisbies with the fanged flyers label glued on); Gobstones (marbles); Kissing concoction (bubbles with the kissing concoction label glued on); Muggle magic tricks and muggle wands; Rubby O'Chickens (rubber chickens); Screaming Yo-Yo's (yo-yos with the screaming yo-yo label glued on).

Everything was labelled one per customer - there was enough for everyone to have one of each.  Each of the items in the stores were in boxes labelled appropriately.  I printed all of the labels and signs off of the Internet.  After the kids had shopped (I let them keep their galleons as party favors) they played for awhile longer and then headed home.  It was alot of work but well worth it - My son had a fantastic time with all of his friends."
