For my eldest daughters 5th birthday, she asked to have an arts and crafts garden party. She loves any type of arts & crafts, so that was no surprise, but the garden theme I thought was
really interesting, considering its cold every year for her birthday.
Invitations: I sent out an online invitation with a poem: "Although spring hasn't sprung, we have a ways to go… Before the bees start buzzing, and flowers grow We're going to have an indoor garden party nonetheless We'll have food, crafts and games, so be our guest!" Decorations: We hung blue tablecloth on the walls around the room, as to make it appear you are out doors. My daughter, mother and I made cut out clouds and a large sun with poster board. We also made bushes with flowers on them, lady bugs, and butterflies that hung with fishwire from the ceiling, all from poster board and construction paper. I also purchased a few items such as a garden themed Happy Birthday banner, and balloons. Additionally, we rented kids sized table and chairs, and decorated those tables (as well as the other tables in the basement) with colorful table clothes. Each table had a bin full of various arts and crafts supplies, e.g. pipe cleaners, glue, scissors, pom poms, feathers, tissue paper, markers, etc. Activities/crafts: The first thing we had the children do was decorate the blank (white) paper bag they received with their name, and any other things they'd like to decorate them with. The children thoroughly enjoyed making paper flowers, decorate your own jig saw puzzle, create your own garden scene (this was a sticker set, with a garden theme), decorate your own flower pot, and a few other garden themed crafts. In addition, we played pin the stinger on the bee, as opposed to the tail on the donkey. This was made by my mother using construction paper, and poster board. We also played musical leaves, where I cut out a dozen or so large (12 in) leaf shapes from poster board, and the kids had to leap around in the circle next to (not directly on top of, because the paper is slippery), the leaves; our adaption of musical chairs. We also had a butterfly shaped piñata. The children had such a wonderful time, and were thrilled to find out not only do they get to take their crafts home as favors, but the candy from the piñata was icing on the cake. Food: My father was gracious enough to cook a lot of various foods, but my daughter wanted pizza, and so did the kids! For dessert I made chocolate cupcakes with dirt and worms (oreo cookies & gummys). I also made vanilla cupcakes with yellow and green icing, with edible flower shapes on each. This was truly a memorable party, and I'm very grateful and appreciative of all the positive feedback I received from the parents and children, and hope any little thing that I did for my party might make another child's party more memorable. Thank you for allowing me to share.
