Olympic Birthday Party For my son's 8th birthday we held Olympic games for his friends.
Before the party I walked off and marked the "100 yard" dash, 50 feet (marked off in 10 ft. increments with flags) for the shot put and discus throw. Then with sidewalk chalk on the driveway, I marked 5 feet in inches for the long jump. The group was divided into two teams (18 kids, call me crazy!) and they rotated the events while my husband and I kept their scores. I made cupcakes and frosted them with the different colors of the Olympic rings and set them on a covered piece of cardboard in the shape of the Olympic rings. For the gift opening time, I made "barbells" out of a 1 1/4" x6' dowel painted black. The weights were aluminum pie plates facing each other and hot glued together. I did 2 or 3 on each side. While my son was opening each gift, that child stood next to him holding the "barbells" over his/her head. Some really got into it. I took a picture of each child doing this and inserted it in their thank-you card a week later. The grand finale was a big game of kick-ball in the cul-de-sac. The parents started to arrive so they even had a cheering crowd. I made sugar cookies and covered each one in gold foil and hot glued a ribbon on the back. At the end of the "games", each child received a gold medal around his/her neck.
