We had an Olympic themed party for a ten year old. For decorations we cut out big Olympic rings, then painted them and hung them up. We also blew up balloons and stuck those around the house.
We began by setting up a card table near the entrance to our house, and when each girl arrived they could pick out the country they would represent. We also gave them badges to write their
name and country on. Next everyone got an outline of their country's flag, and they could use crayons to color it in, and then tape it onto a stick. While they waited, we had activity sheets
with an Olympic theme that they could use. We also took a photo with the birthday girl. When everyone arrived, we played an Olympic CD we have and had a parade of nations with everyone and
their flags. We began with gymnastics. We had had each person bring their favorite music. Each girl made up a routine to their music, and we typed up a scoring sheet where they got points for
certain tricks. We made up medals on Microsoft Word for each event, and we gave an awards ceremony for each event. For the podium we set up milk crates and used Word Art to type in 1st place,
2nd place, and 3rd place. We did equestrian, where we had races on little ride-on horses. We also did volleyball, where we strung rope across our yard and used beach balls we didn't use a
medal for that. We did figure skating also, where we used some carpet skates we had bought at a store, and each girl had music, and, like gymnastics, got points for each thing they did. We
had a whole set of track and field things â€" for shot put we had them throw a croquet ball and measured the distance. We used a pool noodle for javelin to see who could throw the
farthest and had jump over boxes in a timed course for hurdles. We had them jump for long jump to see who could jump farthest and used a Frisbee for the discus, to see who could throw it the
farthest. We used a ribbon, ball, hula-hoop, jump rope, and baton (the props they use in competition) for rhythmic gymnastics, in which no one got a medal. Last, we had wheelbarrow races
(where you pick up someone's legs and hold onto them while they crawl) for old-fashioned chariot races. If someone didn't want to do one of the sports, we had set up a plastic bowling set for
an alternative. Our other alternative was a ring toss
we gathered rings and bottles in different sizes. We spray-painted the bottles gold and printed out signs saying Go for the gold on the sides. After we were done, we went to the local pool and swam for a couple hours. We had juice, ice cream, and cupcakes for food, and a closing ceremony where everyone received a store-bought medal. We used a big purple bucket for goody bags, and in them we put: candy in an Olympic container, a towel we had made with Velcro to wrap around your waist after swimming, a disposable camera, a decorated notebook, and Olympic stickers. For a craft, we covered picture frames with island scrapbook paper and had the guests use stickers to decorate them. We put the photo of them with the birthday girl in the picture frame, and then put the frame in their goody buckets.
