For my son's 4th birthday he had a Peter Pan Pirate party. He was Peter Pan. I made him a green tunic out of some sale material from Wal-Mart and a green felt hat with a red feather. I made
sashes and head scarves out of some wild print material I had on hand, eye patches out of milk carton material covered with some black material I had and elastic. I don't really sew, so
anyone can do this. Everyone got a plastic bubble sword form the dollar store. We had an alligator cake I made from Family Circle magazine with marshmallow eyes.
We put a sea blue plastic tablecloth on the table and made a sail out of an old sheet with skull and cross bones which we hung from the chandelier over the table. We painted clothes pins green and put two small googly eyes on them for alligator place card holders. At the Dollar Tree I bought a plastic bug catcher box for everyone and filled it with pirate treasure- a diamond sucker ring, some shiny pennies, a candy necklace and covered them with plastic wrap and buried them in the sandbox. I copied a map of NeverLand from a Disney party book and colored them by hand. We put a couple of pinches of pixie dust (glitter) in some plastic and included it in the envelope. I used plain envelopes and copied Peter Pan, Captain Hook clipart from the computer on the front of them. I twisted brown grocery bags to look like gnarled branches and made a hanging tree (on the map) out of cardboard with a whole in it just the height of my son, and hung it on the front screen door. When he opened the door they could see his face and had to know the secret password (It was in their invitation-- Happy Birthday)to get in. I made teepees out of yellow napkins and used markers to put some Indian designs on them. Plain green plates. To get to the treasure hunt (sandbox in the back of the yard) we had to walk the plank (board put over the wading pool). All the kids (and adults) had a great time. We did not play games as I have found at that age they like to just play with each other. I took a group picture of them in their pirate costumes and had the local copier print it on card stock for thank you notes. I got so many calls thanking me for the picture! Make sure you let your child help. I lined up the treasure chest and let him fill them assembly line style and glue the googly eyes on the clothes pins. And I let him help me staple the sheet to the wooden dowels for the sail. He still remembers doing that together.
