Pirate Party for a 5-yr-old As the guest arrived their faces were painted to make them look like pirates. It was easy to draw on mustaches and scars with face markers I found at
Wal-Mart. They were all given a pirate hat and eye patch to add to the effect. (Oriental Trading Co.) The birthday boy was suited with a special hat for the captain, a vest with skull
heads on it, a large hoop clip on earring, an eye patch, and of course a hook. Since my son's birthday is around Halloween it was easy to pick these things up at the party stores. After all
the kids transformed into pirates they each popped a black balloon that contained a piece to the treasure map. They pieced the map together with some tape and began their hunt. The map took
them out the back door that led to the garage, through the garage, out the side door of the garage that led to the side of the back yard, through the yard, and around to the other side of the
yard where a treasure chest (decorated Styrofoam ice chest) lay hidden under some leaves and packaging paper. Each area of the map had a name like: bat cave, killer dog pit, beach, and
snake pit. Inside the treasure chest they found their goodybags filled with things like: shark tooth necklaces, mini telescopes, rings, skull keychains, skull pencils, gold coins, paper
money,
and paper airplanes. (Oriental Trading Co.) The kids snacked on gold fish, chips, veggies and dip, ate pizza and drank "sharks blood" -sprite with frozen red juice ice cubes. We played lots of games like musical islands -use pillows instead of chairs, pin the treasure chest on the "X", and broke the treasure chest piņata. I bought the cake from a bakery decorated with pirates on the beach and a treasure chest. The yard was decorated with pirate flags (Oriental Trading Co.), black streamers in the shape of skulls (Halloween decor from party store), black balloons, and a pirate center piece and cutouts. The kids had a great time. They really enjoyed being a pirate for a day and going on the treasure hunt.
