For my son's 6th birthday we had a pirate party. I made the invitations on parchment paper and rolled it up and tied some black jagged fabric around it. The invitation read:
Aye.....ye be invited fer some birthday spirits at captin codey buccaneer bash. His treasure ben stolen and he be round'n up ye ship mates to set sail in search of it. Chart yer course fer the port of (your address). on August 25th at high noon. Follow the map fer the place marked X. Wave yer flag if ye be attendin or hav yer mum send a message by yer phone. p.s. lunch be served and wear ye pirate gear...see ye there...AARRGH At the bottom of the paper I had a clip art of a skull and cross bones. I then put them in clear plastic soda bottles. I tore off the able and with the same clip art that I used on the invitations, I printed it on sticker paper off of my computer and stuck it to the bottles. the cake was made to look like a treasure chest. the mouth of the chest was propped up and candy jewels were stuffed in it and some hung over the edge. I had cut out of cardboard hooks and sprayed then sliver. then I took a large plastic dixy cup and sprayed it black and put a slit in the bottom of the cup and the I placed the hook it in. this way each child had there on hook. I also sprayed painted rocks gold for the treasure hunt. I took some card board and cut out a pirate ship. I used refrigerator boxes to do it. then I painted it and then fastened it to our swing set. I also fastened the other pirate ship to our trampoline. this way they could fight each other with black socks for cannon balls. in each ship there were three cannon cut into the side. I did this with the same large cups and painted them black. we put blue tarp all over the back yard for water and made some islands out of more cardboard. I went to a party store and bought eye patches for a nickle each. I also bought coin money, necklaces, rings, and any other jewels they had and placed them on the table and in the treasure box. on my table not only did I have the jewels and gold coins, I also had some skulls, fishing net went over the black table cloth. I also sprinkled gold glitter all over and had sea shells and star fish on the table too. I had several different stations for the kids to go to. 1 station we had dress up clothes( I went to the thrift shops to find old, pirate looking things), station 2 we had the face painting. we put mustaches, beards, scars, and tattoos on them. Station 3 is where we made the spy glasses. I had empty toilet paper rolls, rubber bands, cellophane, and markers. station 4 is where they decorated their pirated hats I bought. I also had a down time station for those who just wanted to color pirate coloring books or read them. each child had their own treasure box made out of empty tissue boxes. I had decorated them and hot glued jewels on the side. they were also spray painted gold. the loot was made up of candy jewels, gold rocks, and gold coins. I had a treasure map and we had a treasure hut. we also had a bean bag toss I made from cardboard. it had a skull on the front and the kids threw the bean bags in the eyes and the mouth part. I made the bean bags from old fabric and pinto beans. we also played pin the eye patch on the pirate. my husband and I dressed up as pirates, so it was not only fun for the kids but for us also. there ended up being 26 kids at the party.
