Pirate Theme - 5 year old DECORATIONS - We hung red, black, and white crepe paper and the same colored balloons all over the house and yard. We had paper decorations of pirates and pirate ships that we hung on the walls and windows as well. We hung a jolly roger flag at the front of the house over the door, and another in the backyard.  We had black, red and white plates, napkins, and plastic eating utensils.  I found two large plastic bags with a jolly roger on it at a Halloween shop and used these for trash bags.  The adults helping at the party dressed and talked like pirates. FOOD - I baked a large rectangular cake and made a small 4" round cake as well.  I decorated the rectangular cake with blue icing, and made the surface rough like small waves in the ocean.  I put the small round cake in a corner of the rectangle and decorated it with yellow icing to look like sand. I put a plastic palm tree and plastic pirate chest on the "island" with one pirate, and put two other pirates in a plastic boat on the ocean. I used Fisher Price toys that my son already had for the cake decorations, and a friend decided to do the same thing for another party using Playmobile toys. We bbq'd burgers and hot dogs, and served potato salad, fruit salad, chips and had sodas to drink. GAMES -  I bought a huge bag of gold-colored plastic coins and we hid the coins all over the yard before the party started.  The first game we played was "Treasure Hunt" and the kids looked for the coins. I gave them plastic party bags that had a pirates decoration to put their coins in.  This game was a huge hit with the kids!  We also played "Scoop The Treasure": I had each child put one hand behind their back while blindfolded and try to scoop up as many "gold coins" as possible in 20 seconds using a large stirring spoon and mixing bowl.  This is a great sitting game and can be played with pennies or cotton balls as well! Using a large pirate decoration from a party store, we played "pin the eye patch" with pieces of black construction paper that I had cut out before the party started. PRIZES & GOODIE BAGS - I found small plastic treasure boxes that were banks and came with a lock for $1 each at a discount party supply store. I used these instead of the traditional goodie bags. In each treasure chest I put a plastic parachute toy, plastic pirates, plastic and metal rings, and the foil-covered chocolate coins.  The party was supposed to last 3 hours but went on for 6 hours! Many of the adults chose to stay and hang out, and we all had a great time!
