My family has historically done destination-entertains-the-kids parties (pool, ice rink, etc.). So when my son declared that he wanted his 8th birthday party at home, and that he wanted
a Pokemon theme, I needed help! This website was enormously helpful, and I added a few ideas of my own. In Hawaii, I had difficulty finding reasonably priced Pokemon party stuff,
so much of what I did was online.
Most paper goods and invitations, and Pokemon prizes (pens, pins, necklaces, key chains) were found on ebay. I found a Pokemon assortment that provided the bulk of my prizes. About a dozen kids, mostly boys my son's age were invited. Upon arrival, they were greeted with a name badge, which I made by writing the children's names with a Sharpie on Energy" Pokemon cards laminated into a luggage tag. (Energy cards have a lot of blank space so I used self seal adhesive luggage tags found at an office supply store but I imagine heat lamination would be more durable) Secured to shirts with safety pins the luggage tag loop was put in the goody bag for later use. Because it was a mixed crowd I also gave the adults "Energy" name tags but did not laminate the cards. As children arrived I had them choose a Pokemon CD Craft that I downloaded from www.dltk-kids.com. (Cut out pieces of Pokemon characters are glued to a CD.) I printed them in color (there is a B&W option if you want them to color it themselves) and provided scissors and glue. My modifications to the project: Printing them as-is was a little small so a bit of the CD showed around the edge of the project so I printed them 5-10% larger. I also pre-glued a loop of thin fabric ribbon to the top (the project pieces are glued over the ribbon to further secure it) so the project could immediately be hung. I also provided Pokemon coloring sheets word finds and maze for the kids who finished the project early. A basket with cups filled with scissors markers pencils colored pencils and crayons kept the supplies organized on the table. The boys loved this so much I was beginning to think I could have just done this and sufficiently entertained them! But I did have other games after each of which all kids got to pick prizes from the prize tray with the "winners" picking first. 1. Pin the Ember on Charmander. Another contributor to this site said this was a hit with her 9 year-old so I figured I try it -- and they loved it! I drew Charmander on a large sheet of thin orange cardstock. Outlines & features were drawn with a Sharpie. Crayon was used to color the eyes tail flame claws/teeth and belly. Embers (actually small flames I have discovered) were drawn on recycled manila folders which my son colored with red and orange crayon. Each child's name was written on an ember. The kids were blindfolded and spun before they could stick on their ember. 2. Togepi Egg Race. Well I intended to draw Togepi on two hard-boiled eggs but ran out of time. The kids were divided into 2 teams and carried the egg in a spoon across the yard in a relay. 3. Pokemon Bingo. Also from www.dltk-kids.com where you can customize Bingo cards by theme size (3x3 4x4 or 5x5). I did 4x4 cards titled them "EIGHT" instead of BINGO since my son was turning 8 and the winner was the first to have two four-in-a-row. The site lets you download Bingo markers including markers shaped like Pokeballs. I download several sheets put a sheet of self-adhesive lamination on them and cut them out. This was the most tedious task of all. After all that effort I collected the markers so I can share them with someone else who might do this activity -- they are too valuable to throw away! 4. Donut eating contest. Nothing to do with Pokemon but my son has wanted to do this for years! Powdered donuts hung from string are eaten without using your hands. A towel was on hand to brush all the sugar off of their faces and shirts before they went back in the house. After a simple dinner (the party ran from 3-6) dessert was a beautiful dome-shaped Pokeball cake prepared by a dear friend who bakes like a pro. It was a dense devils food cake with rolled fondant icing. It was so smooth & shiny the kids immediately reached out to touch it! (Thank goodness I had them wash their hands beforehand.) Because of the number of guests we also had cupcakes with red and white icing. Goody bags were small and included Pokemon stickers pens a gum toy my son selected. And of course they got to take home their CD craft. This party was a hit with everyone in attendance and I am now less anxious about doing a birthday party at home."
