Pony Ride Party 4yr

July 2007

For my daughter's 4th birthday we decided to have it at a local 4-H Horse club with pony rides and a barn with small animals.  For the invitations, I saw an adoreble pony at an online retailer, but it was way too expensive.  So I decided to make them myself.  I got a pony/horse template from AC more - printed the invitations at home and then cut out the horse shape. I cut a little piece of a bandana and glued to the neck and then used fraiged rope and glue to the tail. (it was somewhat time consuming, but they came out really cute).  While the kids were waiting in line for the ponies, they each got a cowboy/girl hat that I had purchased very inexpensively from Oriental Trading Co. I had also sewn potatoe sacks (basiclaly a pillow case shape) and iron-on a very inexpensive horse head/face. They really enjoyed these and could take them home at the end of the day. I am definitely a novice sewer - but these were very simple to make.  For the cake, I purchased a Playmobil figurines (horses back rider, fencing, cow, chickens - and made my own cake, green icing, choclate jimmies for a dirt road, a cup cake covered with yellow icing for a haystack and then placed all the figures on the cake.  Despite my lack of artistic talent, it came out pretty cute.  We had a cute pony pinata with candy inside.  For the party favors. I found adoreable fabric with little ponies on it, sewed together a small tote bag for the gifts - these came out sooo cute. I filled them with a plush horse, a little farm activity book, and we also made gylcerin soap and inserted a squishy horse toy in the center of the mold.  My dughter loved helping me make these.   When each child was on the horse, we took a picture and used these for the thank you cards. I got foam frames with a little horse wearing a cowboy hat and we glued them together.  We invited 12 kids, so we just did a few of each project on rainy days, etc.  It helped that I had the party idea way in advance so we actually enjoyed making all the crafts and it wasn't a rush.  Most of the items I was able to purchase from Oriental Trading so it wasn't too expensive.
