A Picnic in the Hundread Acre Woods for 1-year old
Although the birthday boy was turning one, most of his guests were much older (including friends of his three-year brother) so we had something for everyone. Winnie the Pooh and Friends invitations announced the time and the place for the party - in the Hundred Acre Woods. We also asked all of the kids to bring their favorite Pooh characters with them (and to put their name on it). As people came to the house, we had balloons in the front yard and a sign that read, "Welcome to the Hundred Acre Woods." The sign had misspelled words and backwards letters. In the backyard, we had several tables and chairs spread out with balloons everywhere. The tables were decorated with Gingham tableclothes and I put one of my son's Pooh characters on each table as a centerpiece. There were also table and chairs for the kids. One table had nametags for all of the kids with crayons and coloring books - I made the books with pictures from the internet. One book was for my son to keep as a memoir and the others were for kids to take home with them. We used everything from our house that had Pooh on it to add to the decor in the back porch and yard including a clock, bathroom rug, poster, bibs, and plates - not to mention the clothes we had on (I even had Winnie the Pooh sneakers). Once all of the kids arrived, we played a few games. 1) Teddy Bear Toss where all of the kids put their Pooh characters on a blanket and we jiggled the blanket so the characters would dance on the blanket while we sang a song. 2) The Honey Pot Hunt was a success too! My three-year-old and I had painted baby food jars to look like honey pots and filled them with Teddy Grahams. Then we hid them throughout the yard so everyone had to go look for them. Because we used the tops of the jars, they cookies were still good enough to eat. The rest of the day, the kids played on the swing set in the yard. For food, we had a typical picnic menu with hamburgs and hotdogs. I used several picnic baskets to layout the food. I also made "Pooh-nut" butter sandwiches for the kids and had "Tigger-ific" Party Mix (ideas I found on the internet). The cake was store-bought and had Pooh and his friends at a picnic on it. I made a special cupcake dessert for the birthday boy, but he fell asleep in it. Just before everyone left, I read a Pooh story to all of the kids and gave them Pooh plastic cups. In the end, the kids left with a coloring book, honey pots, a Pooh cup, balloons, and their own stuffed animals. Overall, the party was easy to set-up, easy to clean-up, inexpensive, fun, and a success. It was the first party I've thrown that I actually got a chance to enjoy it myself!
