For my daughter Jenna's 4th birthday, we had a great "Princess Rapunzel" birthday party. The family room was decorated to look like a pink palace, and our entertainment center
was transformed into Rapunzel's magical tower. When the guests first arrived, I told them they were all princes and princesses for a day, and my husband and I welcomed them into our
palace. I gave them each a silver crown and had them decorate it with little stickers in various shapes. Then they donned their crowns and were ready for our feature presentation,
"Rapunzel". Jenna was Princess Rapunzel, her older brother Hanny was Prince Galen, and our next-door neighbor was the wicked witch. The play started with Jenna as a baby
wrapped in a baby blanket, then the witch kidnapped her and locked her up in a high tower with no doors (the entertainment center).
Locked up in the tower, Rapunzel grew up and we took off the blanket to reveal a long pink princess dress. Her hair was a long braid made from yellow yarn and each time Prince Galen came to visit her, she threw him the braid and he climbed up the entertainment center to join her. The story ended with a royal wedding and Jenna wore a bride costume she had from Halloween. The kids sat without a sound listening as I narrated the enchanting story of Princess Rapunzel. Jenna was delighted to be changing clothes throughout the play, and, to my surprise, she acted out her part very well. After the play, we had a scavenger hunt for heart-shaped chocolates that Prince Galen had hidden for Princess Rapunzel all around the palace, and we played pin the star on the wand. After that, we sang Happy Birthday and ate a "Princess Jenna" birthday cake. In planning the party, I tried to choose a theme that my daughter would especially enjoy. She has a Rapunzel storybook CD on the computer that she always plays with, and she has loved dressing up as a bride ever since my brother's wedding last summer. She got to do all the things that she really enjoyed, but best of all she was the star of the show and the center of attention. She can hardly wait for her 5th birthday!
