Cars Party 3yr

Honorable Mention

January 2009

Invitations: I just used store bought CARS invitations. I figure people just throw these away after the party and I wanted to spend my time and money elsewhere.   Games,Activities, and Decorations: I made signs with the pictures of the cars which coordinated with their shops in Radiator Springs.  For example, the sign for Mater's Towing and Salvage had a picture of Mater, which I downloaded off of the internet, and the words Mater's Towing and Salvage. At that game the kids towed cars out of an old tire.  To make the tow hooks I tied a string to a dowel and then tied a washer on the string. I bought inexpensive cars at the dollar store and glued a magnet on top so they would stick to the washer. A local tire company let me borrow an old tire. At Luigi's Casa Della Tires, the kids tossed beanbags into an old tire, also borrowed from the tire shop. My mom made the beanbags out of checkered flag material.  At Ramon's House of Body Art, there were two activities.  One was temporary tattoos. Here, I had the tattoos, a sponge, a roll of paper towels, a trashcan, and a Tupperware container with water in it. The other activity was rolling car painting.  For this the kids dipped the wheels of a matchbox type car in paint and then let the car roll around on a piece of paper placed in a shallow box. To make it easier and less messy, I bought a red car, a black car and a yellow car.  I put a small of amount of red, black, and yellow paint each in a different disposable Tupperware container and placed the coordinating car in the container.  I kept the lids on when I wasn't there to monitor the painting.  I called the kids over one or two at a time to paint and hung up their pictures on a clothes line to dry. I also had a package of baby wipes available to wipe messy fingers.   As soon as every child had painted, I put the paint away to avoid any spills! At Speedway #1, I covered my patio table with butcher paper and drew a drag strip on it with a crayon.  I purchased pull back cars at OTC and the kids raced them on the table.  Also from OTC, I ordered a small traffic light to place at the end of the speedway. I set the lights to flash red, yellow, green. So when the light flashed green, the kids let go of their car.  Since the cars were so inexpensive, many of them started to break as they fell off the end of the table, but of course the kids thought that was cool.  AT Speedway #2, I made a track in our backyard with wooden stakes and caution tape. I also tied red, green, and blue balloons onto the stakes.  I made box cars of McQueen, Chick, and King out of copy paper boxes. I cut ovals in the sides of the boxes for handles. The boxes were painted the colors of the cars and I stuck big white stickers on them to correspond with the number of each car. I also had signs for Flo's V-8 cafe near the food and Sarge's Surplus near the plates and forks.  There was a sign near the bathroom for Doc Hudson: Dr. of Internal Combustion.  FAVORS: Finally, at a table near the front door was Lizzy's Curios which had the thank you gifts for the guests:  a trophy cup with a matchbox car and a bag of car gummy candy. The candy and trophy cups were purchased through OTC. Cake:  The cake was a racetrack cake made out of two round cakes placed side by side. I frosted both cakes green. Then I place a bowl in the center of each cake and sprinkled chocolate sprinkles around the bowls to make a figure 8 track.  The bowls protect the inside grassy part of the track from getting sprinkles on them.  I put white Good and Plenty candies on the track to make a center line. I then put new, clean McQueen, Chick, and King cars on the cake. You can see the detailed directions for this cake at familyfun.com.
